If today´s Pumas training run is anything to go by then the team to face Italy will be a weak one. It was always going to be the case given the squad but there are noticeable players who look like not making the starting XV. Montero, Cubelli, de la Vega Maybe they are being saved for the French tests... or maybe Tati simply prefers the others...have to wait and see.

Whatever the reason it really takes balls to field such a lineup in a test match against a Tier One opponent.

In training today the lineup was as follows:

1 Roncero (Stade Français)
2 Guiñazú (Biarritz)
3 Gomez Kodela (Biarritz)
4 Farías (Los Pampas)
5 Lozada (Edinburgh)
6 Fessia (Los Pampas)
7 Senatore (Los Pampas)
8 Leonardí (Los Pampas)
9 Landajo (Los Pampas)
10 Mieres (Exeter)
11 B Agulla (Agen)
12 Contepomi (Stade Français)
13 Ascarate (Los Pampas)
14 Gozio (London Scottish)
15 Tuculet (Sale Sharks)

Teams listed for the 2011-2012 season.

might as well call that Argentina A

Argentina worked so hard to get a better fixture list, but then when they do why do they play this understrength team?

if they were going to play this weaker team, they should have played a Tier 2 team like the USA or Canada maybe, who would both probably be very happy for the match

Tuculet is boss :)

even though he lied on Twitter about staying at Sale?

@SaleRugbyNewsI am Sale Sharks player. Yup, doesn't change his performances on the pitch.

Technically it wasn't a lie as he was a Sale player at the time, and did have a year on his contract :p

Six of the players in the June tests will be playing in TRC, joining the 24 already named. Contepomi and Roncero are out while a number of others could well make the final 30 man squad. So, although it is Argentina A, without question, there are question to be answered and this is the time to do it. I´d say the players in bold (see below) have realistic chances of all making TRC and all should be highly upset to not make the cut. Added to this the names of Cubelli and de la Vega as players with strong chances.

In any event the Italy squad named aint all that good. Closer to the real Italian team but, nonetheless, Argentina should win the match. Vs France its another story... Hopefully some of the 24 return or else France could really win big.

The style of play Argentina are looking to utilize is different than tradition as the goal is to score more tries, not some more but plenty. I can see why many of the players picked are therefore in the team...

Will it be broadcasted? Can't find that many info about it?

Will be on ESPN in South America.

Have the other 24 players been named?

Also, what will be the Italian side?

Yes, last week Phelan named 24 players for TRC. 6 others will join them. Here you go.

No word yet on the Italian lineup. Phelan will confrim the Pumas side today.

Thanks. Then I guess those six you selected are the logical ones. Although I think they should have a third scrummie and a third hooker touring, at least to gain some experience. There has to be better than Guiñazú.

Phelan confirmed the squad Melhor posted earlier. The side, bench included:

1- Rodrigo Roncero, 2- Eusebio Guiñazú, 3- Francisco Gómez Kodela, 4- Esteban Lozada, 5- Julio Farías Cabello, 6- Genaro Fessia, 7- Tomás Leonardi, 8- Leonardo Senatore, 9- Martín Landajo, 10- Ignacio Mieres, 11- Agustín Gosio, 12- Felipe Contepomi (c), 13- Gabriel Ascárate, 14- Belisario Agulla, 15- Joaquín Tuculet.
Suplentes: 16- Bruno Postiglioni, 17- Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, 18- Benjamín Macome, 19- Tomás De La Vega, 20- Tomás Cubelli, 21- Manuel Montero y 22- Román Miralles.

typical awful Phelan selection, he really is Argentina's version of Kidney

this match should have been used to experiment things, such as Horacio Agulla or Manuel Montero at 13 for example, this match would have been the best opportunity, but now it is wasted with this crap side most of whom are not good enough for the actual Pumas side

a player that sums up this poor selection for me is Agustín Gosio starting at 11

he is 29, has no future with the Pumas with the strong depth in wingers that is emerging and unlikely to improve a great deal at his age, Montero or Moyano should have started ahead of him

what's the point of picking journeymen in late twenties or early thirties, players like Lozada (30), Fessia (30), Gosio (29)

this would be like Wales for example, calling up Ben Broster for a Barbarians match with Adam Jones away

there would be no point, as he's never likely to start for the first choice side, whilst a youngster would benefit from the experience more

I absolutely agree with you.

Scrumhalf = Tomás Cubelli.

He is the future. He´ll be ahead of Figuerola and Vergallo in no time. A complete player. Best Pumas scrumhalf since Pichot. Could possibly be the best 9 in The Rugby Championship and in time should really develop.

Hooker = Bruno Postiglioni.
Like Guiñazú can play in all three frontrow positions. Younger and better.. though Guiñazú is not the best player...

I would like to see the remaining six players being: Cubelli, Postiglioni, Goméz Kodela, Farías, de la Vega and Senatore.

Agreed but I understand the selections. Its final chance for Gozio. If he does not impress its game over for hsi international career. Same goes for Lozada, who is only there because Mariano Galarza is out of action. Fessia is there for reliability but does not look likely for The Rugby Championship. de la Vega will start vs France as will Cubelli and Montero.

Italy:

15 Luke MCLEAN (Benetton Treviso, 37 caps)
14 Giovanbattista VENDITTI (Aironi Rugby, 4 caps)
13 Roberto QUARTAROLI (Aironi Rugby, 3 caps)
12 Alberto SGARBI (Benetton Treviso, 17 caps)
11 Tommaso BENVENUTI (Benetton Treviso, 17 caps)
10 Kristopher BURTON (Benetton Treviso, 14 caps)
9 Edoardo GORI (Benetton Treviso, 13 caps)*
8 Robert BARBIERI (Benetton Treviso, 21 caps)
7 Mauro BERGAMASCO (Aironi Rugby, 89 caps)
6 Alessandro ZANNI (Benetton Treviso, 63 caps)
5 Marco BORTOLAMI (Aironi Rugby, 93 caps) – capitano
4 Antonio PAVANELLO (Benetton Treviso, 7 caps)
3 Martin CASTROGIOVANNI (Leicester Tigers, 85 caps)
2 Carlo FESTUCCIA (Banca Monte Parma Crociati, 51 caps)
1 Alberto DE MARCHI (Aironi Rugby, esordiente)

a disposizione
16 Davide GIAZZON (Femi-CZ Vea Rovigo, esordiente)
17 Lorenzo ROMANO (Aironi Rugby, esordiente)
18 Joshua FURNO (Aironi Rugby, 2 caps)
19 Simone FAVARO (Aironi Rugby, 10 caps)
20 ***o TEBALDI (Aironi Rugby, 14 caps)
21 Riccardo BOCCHINO (Estra I Cavalieri Prato, 12 caps)
22 Giulio TONIOLATTI (Aironi Rugby, 10 caps)

I still can't understand why Bortolami is there apart lineout, and the fact he's the captain it doesn't settle me down.
I still can't understand why Festuccia is there along with Bergamasco in the starting XV, but hopefully the former is gonna start only this test... Favaro is now in better than Bergamasco.
Quartaroli uses to play more at inside centre and Benvenuti at outside centre, but Brunel wants to test some depth in those position, I'm fine with that, nice 22 bar those 3.

Zanni must be our captain even with Parisse.

Argentina won this 37-22

poor performance from Italy, who should be very disappointed to lose with that margin to such a weak Argentine side

Canada have a real chance next week, but .....

the one point Italy was strong was at the scrum, they scored a penalty try early on, and also were on top through most of the match, Canada will need to contain this next week

however optimism for Canada is .......

1. Kris Burton is astonishingly bad
2. the backs outside him are also woeful
3. the defence in this match was some of the worst, they let Roncero break two tackles and run 20 metres to score, and Contepomi just breeze through towards the end

good result for Argentina considering the side they put out, and a reassuring confidence boost in their depth, although France will surely not be as bad as Italy

however the turnout in the crowd was poor for Argentina who normally sell out, perhaps they either saw the team Argentina put out, or read Feicarsinn's prediction :p

Having Argentina vs Brazil in soccer at the same time didn´t help!

here is my match report...

I was quite impressed to be honest. This was a Pumas squad without 24 players. Roncero, Contepomi, Landajo and.... Leonardí were impressive. It was really clear how much has changed since the World Cup as they want to play to score tries rather than just play to win. This same team 12 months ago would have been struggling.

Guiñazu hopefully doesn't get near the team again on this evidence, his failure to hook the ball led to a turnover scrum and Gori's try

Argentina attack was okay, but they were aided by some feeble Italian defence

all in all though, a good confidence boost for the Pumas reserves, hopefully there is a stronger team for the France matches

also the Pumas couldn't afford to avoid defeat otherwise they would have lost a heap of ranking points

It's great to see that Argentina has got a lot of depth in their ranks and that their youngster (u20) are doing really well at the World Cup in South Africa with victories over France and Australia. Promising signs for the future.
