A Political Thread pt. 2

Why trust experts in any field. Half a day on YouTube and I'm a qualified barrister, can perform open heart surgery, and have more science knowledge than Brian Cox.

All by doing my own research. Experts my arse.

The do you own research line is spouted alot by the Qanon crowd and flat earthers. In reality it means find sources that support my views, and don't prove i am a total mong.
And on top of this what I also find troubling and enables what you're talking about, is the total erosion of faith in any of our institutions, even academic or medical institutions as they're no better than Dave down the pub, right? It's dicked up.

Pretty much. I received management words of advice after telling a Qanon, flat earther colleague at work they were an idiot.

I asked for sources I could review that supported there views during conversation. They rolled out "Do your own research". I replied "I already have and it supports the view you're an idiot".

A management meeting with no biscuits followed.

If I got pulled up in work for that I'd consider leaving.

Not quite the same, but in my student days I worked in retail and this new manager decided she didn't like me (I honestly don't know why), but after a few weeks of her annoying me I finally answered back:

Her: You need to get this done quickly,
Me: I'm nearly done, I would have been done earlier if [night shift] had finished, but I had to do their work too.
Her: Well, no stopping, don't stand and talk to others (I never do this. I barely knew anyone there).
Me:...oh, sorry, I'm not interested in becoming a manager.

Shut her right up.
Made a point of caller her out every time she stood around after that 😂

Wait are you guys literally advocating to only hold 'expert' opinions and not to read? It seems like you are

Who eroded these institutions?

I'll take things that never happened for 100 alex

Definitely not.

But you need to be reading from good material.

Reading posts on facebook and listening to podcasts is not good material.

Ok, so let's put it into the specific conversation from this morning...

Douglas Murray makes the claim Isreal has done nothing wrong, and all their actions are necessary and required to achieve their goals, because he travelled to Isreal and spent time with the IDF.

Do you agree with these types of experts? Or do you question whether the IDF, who are the experts on Isreali military tactics, is making the best choices?

I'm supposed to dedicate my life to pharmaceutical sciences to know whether or not I can take ibuprofen?

It's that the claim being made? Or is that the extreme example for maximum effect in a discussion?

Do you agree with Douglas Murray that only experts can discuss issues?

Unlike you to take umbrage with an extreme example after dozens of pages of contaryism and arguing in bad faith
You avoid the question, but I'm the one arguing in bad faith hahaha

The entire conversation from this morning, is that I disagree with Murray, that only experts can discuss issues in the public forum, and that experts are sometimes flawed, for differing reasons, and anyone can become knowledgeable on a subject.

Do you agree or disagree with this position?
