I feel like it's unfair to brand someone transphobic who recognises a trans man / woman and a cis man / woman differently.

Equally, I think considering a cis person to be "biologically" their gender but a trans person not to be is transphobic.

You've put is better than me. The bottom is what I'm railing against and what was presented. The top is fair viewpoint.

I disagree slightly on sport rather than should I prefer could. But I've long said that's a matter for sport scientists and individual sports with an evidence based approach who have come to radically diffrent conclusions across the board.

It was the same argument with homophobia and allowing gay men in dressing rooms.

Again note the lens is always about men assigned at birth never women. One of the more eye opening moments for me over transgendered people was when I realised alot of the talking points were exactly the same people used about homosexual people 15+ years ago.

i try and not post memes or the like in an otherwise pretty serious thread, but this comic artist i follow posed this a while back and i think it sums things up nicely, its a slippery slope when start banning people form things



a lot of women i work with including Mrs Womble are very conscious of this, once the trans people have been pushed back into hiding...they come after the gays...and then the women in the workplace or anywhere outside the kitchen...and then the people of colour. we've spent the last few hundred years trying to have equal rights for all, not to have different class of citizen...when we stop it will all start to unravel

No you can still have men only and women only clubs. You do have men only clubs still. Or like the Masons women are allowed as guests of members etc. Same for womens only institutions.

The government's own guidance on the Equality Act says that while it is unlawful for a private club to discriminate against, harass or victimise an existing or potential member it is lawful to restrict membership to people who share a particular characteristic

1 In 30 women are sexualy assaulted or raped by men. Some figures put it as low as 1 in 12. So there is a very real likelihood that every man on this forum knows a women this has happened too regardless of if they've said something or not. More worryingly that the offender is likely to be a friend or family member.

I'll assume the figures are horrifically similar for trans people and again the main issue is probably men.

I can see there concerns about who has access to spaces where they feel vulnerable including prisons, rape crisis centres or changing rooms. I don't worry like my daughter does on a night out if my drinks going to be spiked or I might get groped by the taxi driver. Like it or not women have every reason, ever day to be wary of men and strange men especially.

How you square that circle and make everyone feel safe i don't know.

The thing that always sticks in my head is someone I knew who was very far right, although refused to admit it. He said the biggest issues for him were illegal immigration and trans people. When I pressed why he deemed trans such an issue when it didn't affect him, he said he didn't want to refer to them by the gender they chose and wanted to call them as he saw it. He also did the whole "protecting women" and the fictional bathroom scenario.

I pressed him that he supported numerous proven sexual predators so how could he possibly claim he cared about protecting women at the same time. He just shrugged and said it's different.

There is no reasoning with such people. Suffice to say, getting a text at 6am when Trump won rubbing it in my face, sealioning like crazy (he believes everything that aligns with his views without question whilst constantly demanding evidence he will never accept for anything else) and his generally horrific attitude mean we are no longer friends.

I'm all for associating with people who have different views, I think bubbles are dangerous things. The problem is when someone else is that stuck in their bubble, you can't make any connection. He literally said Hitler wasn't all bad and said there should be genetic tests to prove Englishness to be eligible for the team (ie a roundabout way of saying anyone too dark skinned shouldn't play for the national side).

It's why I find the whole "protecting women" side of anti-trans arguments made by men to ring hollow, these people don't give a **** about women's rights except as a convenient vehicle to attack a different group.

How you square that circle and make everyone feel safe i don't know.

I mean nail on the head with men on that front. A guy inclined to molest women isn't going to go through the shame and rigmarole to pretend to be one to enter women safe spaces.

On making everyone feels safe I don't have a good one on public restrooms. I've long advocated separate indvidual ungendered restrooms but that brings into account the issue of vulnerability.

Shelters are another matters and they simply need to be trans inclusive or not. And I've not issue if a shelter doesn't want to be. Cis-Women seeking refuge feeling safe is important. But equally you need some shelters for trans people to feel safe too. As long as those spaces are both being catered to it's fine. The issue is people use the language that all shelters must be one or the other.
