A History Thread

"The machine-gunners' dreams of point-blank fire into serried masses of Emus were soon dissipated. The Emu command had evidently ordered guerrilla tactics, and its unwieldy army soon split up into innumerable small units that made use of the military equipment uneconomic. A crestfallen field force therefore withdrew from the combat area after about a month."

If you love history and tanks (tick tick for me) then this is definitely something to take an interest in. This was the second King Tiger to ever come off the production line (hence the pre-production turret) was captured by Commonwealth forces in 1945 and has been sat in Bovington ever since. Making this a runner is going to take some doing.

I love how we "captured" it, turned up at field and it was just there.

Tank Museum is great, Dad lives about 20mins away.

BBC are showing quite a cool series called “Civilisations: Rise and Fall”

I’ve only seen 1 episode, which I think was episode 3 of 4 covering Rome, Egypt, Samurai and, the one I watched, The Aztecs.

I’ve listened to a few podcasts on Cortes and Montezuma before and these shows, naturally only being an hour long, are more overviews than anything in depth but still pretty interesting.

Such an interesting story. Though I didn’t learn that much from it I wasn’t quite aware it was like 3 years or something from Cortés landing to the Aztec empire falling which one of the dudes said is the fastest fall of an empire in history. Would make a pretty cool movie (especially with the story of Malintzin) but they’d probably ruin it if they did. Be one of those things where our understanding of what actually happens would be far more fascinating that what Hollywood cooked up.
