2nd test - Australia v British & Irish Lions

Wallabies team looks more well rounded than last weekend and I think this will much closer. Lions should still win but if they don’t I think Farrell’s selections will deservedly become a major talking point.

Interesting calls - not at all where I’d have gone!

Pleased Jack Morgan makes the 23 as I think he’s had a good tour, agree with most peoples view on Ryan being fortunate.

Aussie team looks much better on paper this week. Slightly surprised Lynagh hangs onto the 10 jersey but it’s hard to blame him for the opening 40 minutes last week, the team were totally on the back foot. Heck of a place to prove yourself though in front of 100,000 at the MCG!

Feels like Aki needs his best game on tour and is key to the Lions game - he hasn’t been at his best yet IMO and I say that as someone with huge respect and admiration for how he’s played these past few seasons, but he needs a big one.

McReight and Valentini could really test the Lions back row to see if they can back last week up.

Having seen the line ups, the fact we’ve lost Ringrose and Tuipolotu, and that the bench doesn’t feel quite so strong or in form (imho), I just have this feeling the Aussies might have us in a bit of trouble this week.

Just feels like a few things are bubbling up that make it possible.

More i think about it the more mind boggling the Ryan selection is. Could have had Cummings, could have had Earl or Van Der Flier on the bench and Chessum move to lock. Honestly, it's a more biased selection than Farrell Jnr. At least Farrell has had some good moments. I'm honestly struggling to think of what Ryan has done well this tour.

Ryan been alright on tour
Aussies bench was big last weekend and with these returning players it's bigger

Ryan will bring more impact off the bench than Cummings and with a 5/3 split you need a lock sub (especially with how Beirne has been throwing himself about I don't fancy him going into the row with 20 minutes to go after making like 18 tackles already)

As a starter I would pick Cummings based on the tour but as a bench player I get why Ryan is picked

I've seen it all now, @Leonormous Boozer referring to Genge by his actual name instead of Smellis. Pffft.

Yeah Ryan makes loads of sense to anyone who's watched him over the last 4 years for Ireland. Didn't reach the heights expected of him early in his career but just an outrageously solid test player. His injuries regularly coincided with Ireland losses too.

Yeah he does a lot of the dirty work defends like a blindside, smashes into rucks and defends the Maul incredibly

Cummings has had a great tour but I like the pack bench balance

Genge, Morgan, Stuart are smashers in attack
Ryan brings the defensive edge
Kelleher is solid (I would've been tempted to go with George and keep the unit english)

Ryan must've been sandbagging himself massively this tour, cause he's been poor

Beirne and Curry stepped up massively for the test, I guess

TBF I get it, against weak provinces the focus is prob all on attack easy to prob lose focus and the basics.

Whereas Curry and Beirne (and TBF Ryan) are all known for their monstrous defence and extremely solid basics.

Completely disagree. Cummings has been better than Ryan both starting and off the bench.

Hope the Wallabies win tbh. That Lions team is an absolute joke.
While I question some of the selections
- dropping Genge, in my mind you establish domination up front from the start, you don’t hang on, then wait for the cavalry
- wanting (it seems) to drop Tuipoluto and Jones
- keeping the underperforming back 3 , probably shows the paucity of options through injury, loss of form and poor original selections
- Kelleher - to my mind the most obvious candidate to drop, with clear better options

I would however, never, ever hope Australia win. At anything

Yeah but Ryan has also performed to much higher level this year

Before last weekend I would’ve agreed with you, but Curry and Beirne just proved the warms this tour means little

Test match mentality does rise to the top

I personally think it won't matter unless the Lions have a real stinker and Australia play very well. If it doesn't work out though Farrell will shoulder the responsibility with his selections.

Not starting your best scrummaging props with Aki in the midfield could be a disaster, as well - there's gonna be a lot of scrums
I think Porter is a better scrummager than Genge. Whereas Genge is a better ball carrier. So I can see the logic starting Porter and finishing with Genge.

This is a poor Lions team compared to years past. So many out of form players in the 23.

If Oz can get some front foot ball, watch out. Bobby V, Harry “Dad Bod” Wilson, and Big Willie must dent the line.

Oz must take this game to the gutter the first 30 minutes and grind down the lions. Then sub everyone with the 6-2 and hope the last 20 minutes opens up.

This is key, Aki has been asked to be a ball player on tour, and he has hands like shovels, Tuipilotu is far superior there.

I think Farrell has a very clear gameplan, with Aus returning BIG men from injuries, he's expecting them to fall off a cliff after 60 mins, the addition of Genge, Ryan and Morgan are energy needed they lacked last week (although I personally would have gone Cummings).

The problem with this game plan, is that it pretty much gives up the tight 5 dominance it had last week in the first half, at the first sight of some beef. I dont like that, I would want my tight 5 to put it on this new look (ish) pack from minute 1, Genge IMO was probably the best player on the park 1st 40, and id have preferred him to start.

My other big concern, is that Farell on the bench pretty much kills the backline, if he's asked to play 10 we lose creativity, if 12 we lose the go forward. Im not Marcus Smith fan, but at least he gives you a creative outlet late on if chasing the game, Farrell only manages the game from a 9 point lead onwards IMO.

If the Lions tighten up, and make collisions the order of the day, instead of the intricate wider plays, I think the lions finish too strong for Aus, but if the Aus pack can stay on their feet, conserve energy, and go after that 12 pivot through Mcreight and Valetini, I think it'll be a long day at the office.

Im worried Farrell has ****** this selection up, Kelleher deserved dropping, Genge didnt, Ryan hasn't been good, and whats the point bringing Morgan on for Curry on 60 mins?

Farrell on the bench rubs me up the wrong way, I defended his selection for driving standards, but to make the 1st possible Test squad is frustrating.

Let's not touch upon the back 3, who were poor with an armchair ride last week, I expect Aus to see that as a chink, and to bombard them with high balls, and work field position.
