2016 Olympic Games, Rio

Damn game over now for Serbia who if they had some discipline in defence might have won this game.

Or maybe not

Takes us 1 gold ahead of the Japanese now doesn't it.

Not sure it's as simple as that, although they did give up some cheap / silly fouls.

Would a single player in the current Dream Team make the original one (with the obvious exception of whoever replaces Christian Laettner)?

Edit: and whatever happened to big men playing the game?

game's gotten too fast for big man, athleticism is more important than size

still have big players, kevin durant is about 6'10" but they no longer play back to the basket

On yesterday's judo controversy.

Sounds like it was politics as opposed to sour grapes. He was even under pressure to withdraw from the bout entirely.

I assumed that was the case. I'm totally out of touch with the game, it's certainly a very different game to the one I grew up watching in the mid nineties.

Has it stopped being bounce bounce bounce score bounce bounce bounce bounce score. Ive always found it hard to enjoy...it's amongst the few sports I simply don't get.

Scenes in the rowing. Mens single scull ends in a dead heat between the Kiwi and the Croatian. Both get same time but Kiwi gets the gold. Photo finish had literally millimeters in it

Didn't the BBC have the Croatian down for the Gold originally. I thought I was that and thought it was strange as I thought the Kiwi had just pipped him, then walked back in to the room a few minutes later and they were interviewing the Kiwi about his win.

Great race from the GB mens eight, never really looked under threat.

They called dead heat so they assued they'd share gold, apart fro Cracknell who suggested they do it again when the Croat looked like he could barely stand let alone do it again, he didnt seem to upset with his silver.

Top notch from both 8's boats

In the same way that rugby is scrum, scrum, scrum, kick, kick, kick, yes! I don't mean to be patronising, but I've always thought that it's a game that you need to understand to enjoy watching. The same goes for rugby to a fair extent. Again, rather like rugby, it is played by some fantastic all round athletes, which adds to the spectacle for me. It's no coincidence that Maro Itoje played basketball to a high level and I suspect that there are a good few guys playing in the NBA who would outstrip Itoje in the athleticism stakes.

I thought this was quite witty until the guy on the bike with the megaphone followed behind, at which point I genuinely lolled!

When did athletics meets stop using lane 1? Late few events Ive seen just keep it empty

Considering that James Naismith was a rugby coach who invented basketball as an indoor winter sport to keep his players in shape, it shouldn't be surprising that there are similarities in the games.

Do you have any more information about that riffraff? Wikipedia confirms my understanding that he invented it to provide winter recreation at the Springfield YMCA (there's a nice nod to this in the Simpsons). It says that he took elements from the popular games of the time (including rugby) to come up with something suitable for indoor play. His bio mentions that he played rugby, but doesn;t say anything about coaching.

Mechanically, I don't really think there is too much similarity between the games, although anyone who has played to any sort of level will tell you that basketball is a lot more physical game than most would realise.

As this is an Olympic thread, fun (or maybe boring) fact, Baron Pierre de Coubertin was a big rugby fan, not only was he a big force behind its inclusion in some early Olympiads, he refereed the first ever French championship final in 1892.

I must admit I can't find online corroboration for the way I've always heard the story told. Perhaps it morphed into legend based on the fact that he borrowed much inspiration from his experience with rugby (amd other sports) in designing the sport as a better way to pass the indoor gym time and meeting physical fitness objectives. Certainly the free flowing nature of the game, the focus on passing, the change of possession and line out when going out of bounds, and the fact that the first players has to be reminded not to run with the ball or tackle each other all lend credence to the influence of rugby on the sport.
