Isn't the tackler obliged to make sure the player lands safely? Thought that was the whole point of the rule, fekitoa would have kept running if Lowe wasn't there...Lowe made a tackle but didn't control it...

Didn't he?

How much control do you want him to have? It wasn't your typical horizontal tip tackle where he just plain dropped him out of share carelessness. I only saw it a couple of times, so maybe I need to have another look. But to me it just looked like an unfortunate incident that in all reality, wasn't even a penalty.

Lot of Chiefs fans whinging on social media sites, but thought the Chiefs got away with a heck of a lot. Especially at scrum time. Minor quibble, but what happened the "use it" rule? There were times where the Chiefs weren't necessarily powering forward, but were given a lot of hang time. I'm advised that this particular referee isn't that spectacular in general though and tends to miss a fair bit.

I'd say (if anything) it should've been a penalty to the Chiefs rather as Fekitoa was clearly jumping into the tackle. That's bloody dangerous and his own fault he got off worse for it.

Justin marshal made a interesting call, the second penalty try, he said the highlanders have just folded under pressure, no need to bin anyone as it was out of their control...how is a penalty try then?!?? If it has collapsed under sheer pressure and no one have actually committed a foul... How is it a penalty?

Also, last penalty shouldn't have been given but I saw several that shouldn't have been given against us and several that should have been given so I'm taking it

No possession and not territory but we got 4 points !

he can't be blamed for Fekitoa jumping into the tackle though. His tackling motion was completely normal it was only Fekitoa trying to vault over him that caused it. As far as I know you're not allowed to jump into tackles are you?

You could tell he was going to give a penalty at the end, I announced it to the guy I was watching with as soon as they had the line out. He just seemed like that kind of ref. have to say; 2 penalty tries, a ridiculous yellow card and the match deciding penalty... Not the sort of impact you want a ref to have.

Yup no way that a was penalty or yellow card.

Fekitoa jumped into it and was all smiles when Lowe was carded.

Nick Briant needs to not ref anymore games at all.

Well - yes... if you lift them.

Fekitoa was all of 2 feet off the ground and at no point was he lifted.

Give me your address and I'll send you a tape measure, 2 feet?

It wasn't a yellow but am I the only one who thinks the precedent has been set for that being a penalty?

What a **** game. We lost it as we missed too many penalties. Better won at the end I guess.
Better luck next game.
Goo Chiefs!

There are five elements that have to all be present before a tip tackle can be called.

The tackler
► Comes to a stop
► Grasps the ball carrier below the hips
► Lifts him straight upwards
► Turns him upside-down.
► Lets him go or drives him to the ground.

The two I have highlighed in blue are missing from Lowe's tackle. Most importantly, no lift = no tip tackle

Here is an article I wrote for rugbyrefs.com back in 2011 that better explains this

Anybody know any links to stats on this game? the territory stats they were displaying during the game were crazy one sided!

IF the Chiefs had not muffed so many breaks and scoring opportunities they'd of won this game hansomly.

dont see how anybody can justify blaming the ref for this one as its pretty much a 80% chance in games now you are going to get a ref thats totally out of his depth with the way they are interpreting nearly every call going on in a game these days.

When was the precedent set though? And by whom? That's the first time I've ever seen something like that be penalised. I can remember getting penalised once for being in Fekitoas position, the ref pinged me for dangerous play cause I tried to vault the guy. If that's a penalty then you'd be well advised to jump into it every time someone went low, you're guaranteed to cartwheel over them.

Check out the match stats tab.

The game kind of reminded me of the Crusaders/Shark game from last year. One team wins with everything going against them.

Here are the the most telling stats IMO..

Yep, and the two conversions were obviously from right in front, so it's even worse than it looks ;)

I agree, it's ridiculous. The precedent has been set by when players jump for the ball in the air. In those circumstances the jumper is sacred. That's a poor rule in itself but it should never be extrapolated to a tackle situation.

On the replay I watched on the news tonight the ball was well clear of fekitoa when he got tackled. That said the yellow was pretty harsh but he did an excellent job almost Jimmy Cowan esk of milking it....

If the ref was consistent he might have looked at one or two of Fekitoa's tackles as he really smashed a couple of chiefs players and im sure one of them was similar but not quite as bad looking.

Although Fekitoa didnt feature much on attack I thought his defence was pretty impressive. I only remember someone stepping him once which isnt a bad effort considering how pear shaped it went at times for the HL.

I thought the Ref was just over the top with alot of calls he made it wasnt just these couple against the chiefs at the end of the game it was right though and usually against the HL.

Interesting how the HL managed the same running meters with less runs than the Chiefs... that also is pretty telling. I never would of thought that was even as it seemed to me the HL only got 3 or so major break outs.... they probably were long ones though.

I swear the territory on the coverage was at like 19% or something until that final 5 minutes or so.
