2014 Super Rugby: Highlanders vs Lions (Round 13)

Apparently I've seen enough ... Firkin Sportsnet have yet another outage with about 20 mins to go ... Makes me wonder why I get up at stupid o'clock to watch a Black screen, and pay for the privilege ... Sorry but it's happened several times this year ... Internet radio suggests that the lions were hard done by to have a try disallowed, but have scored out wide ... But missed the conversion to win the match

You missed some excitement Shaggy! The Lions were on attack for basically the entire last 20 mins (apart from the time the Highlanders got a 5m scrum and did a ridiculous kick move...). The Lions scored with about 15 to go from a blatant forward pass (which wasn't referred to the TMO). They looked to have scored against the post with a couple of minutes to go (I would have awarded it) but the TMO denied them for some reason.

They did score again with 1 minute to go, but there was a hint of a forward pass there too (again not referred to the TMO for some reason). Probably the biggest controversy was at the end when the Highlanders charged early and got stopped by the ref (though it looked like Jantjies may have started his approach?). Jantjies missed, but for some reason wasn't given another shot. It was pretty farcical to be honest.... at least the good guys won!

Yeah... I guess I'll catch it on the Internet highlights ... I can send Mr L.Bray a very terse tweet on your behalf if you like ... I just sent one to Sportsnet so I've had some practice :)

Overall the Highlanders were lucky to win that. Very lucky. They played very well in the 1st half, but were completely dominated in the 2nd - the Lions had 80% of the ball and territory in the 2nd half! The thing that cost us the most was Chris Kings act of stupidity - we didn't concede any points when he was off, but it was sure to have drained the rest of the side defending with 14 men for 10 minutes.

We really missed Christie, and it didn't help that his replacement Hardie was injured early on too. I like Evans, but he is not an openside. Robinson was solid at hooker, but I felt scrum really improved when Coltman (and Hames) came on in the front row. Wheeler did a lot of work on defense, as did Franklin (on debut). I thought Manu was a bit quiet though.

Aaron Smith was sharp, but that 'tackle' attempt in the Lions 3rd try was pathetic. I thought Parker played pretty well. He kicked well from hand and made his tackles. That drop goal was handy too! Burleigh made his tackles too which made me happy :). Fekitoa was well contained, and I thought looked quite threatening on the wing. Buckman had his best game for the Highlanders. He was reliable on defense (as always), but also scored two excellent tries - breaking several tackles for the 1st and showing some serious speed for the 2nd. Ben Smith was Ben Smith.

Oops, I forgot to mention the best Highlanders player/s.... the Lions goal-kickers (and the ref that didn't know the laws at end...).
