[2014 Mid-Year Test] South Africa vs Scotland 28/06/14

Am I right in thinking this is Adam Ashe's first game of senior rugby? Hell of a baptism...

I read this preview article and the way they are building up the Bokke is ridiculous. TBF they end with a relatively realistic margin of Bokke by 15 (if we inflate the score a bit at the end) but the way they carry on you'd think this wasn't an ad-hoc Bok team which it very much is. Or am I giving to much respect to Scotland?

.. at altitude maybe because if we win well there the score is usually somewhat inflated but if we win Scotland by 25 in Nelson Mandela bay with our team as is I'd be very pleasantly surprised. Unless Scotland has no depth whatsoever- I wouldn'y know as I don't watch any Scottish matches other than against SA and they tend to have a way of keeping it very close with us.

**** me, I am going to have to leave this piece of **** country. Cable thieves stole some telephone cable about 3 weeks back. I've been running with a 3G dongle and have no landline so I'm losing business. Apparently Telkom have now made a decision that they are not replacing any lines... WTF!

:p PR won't even be politically correct enough to offer Scotland by 20 or more in their poll. I mean, what if Scotland actually do it, and they beat S.A. by 25 ? It won't have even been selectable lol. The last options are just all S.A.

"Head-to-head: An astute Twitter follower pointed out a gulf in age, experience and caps that borders on the ridiculous between the two skippers, Victor Matfield and Grant Gilchrist. 14 years and 105 Tests separate the pair, who line up opposite each other in the second-row. The young Scot will face no greater challenge, nor be treated to such a masterclass in lock play than by the veteran who can do it all. "

Look, Matfield has had a huge impact... up till 2009. Yes, he is a legend of the game much like Richie McCaw but just like McCaw he has been in steady decline for some time now (even if he playing brilliantly currently.. for a 37 year old man) and there are better current players so while a 14 year age gap and a 105 test cap difference looks impressive on paper the young Scottish bloke would've had a harder time on te field if Etzebeth or PSdT were fit.

so lets have a look at the battle on the pitch and i'll highlight who i think is better. (most likely all south africa but i'll see.)

15.) Willie Le Roux vs Stuart Hogg (quite obvious)
14.) Cornal Hendricks vs Sean Maitland (close one, but Hendricks played better last week)
13.) JP Pietersen vs Nick De Luca (pietersen is good while de luca is p*ss)
12.) Jan Serfontein vs Peter Horne (dont know i haven't seen Serfontein play)
11.) Lwazi Mvovo vs Tommy Seymour (i think so anyway)
10.) Handre Pollard vs Duncan Weir (was going to highlight duncan weir due to experience but i dont think he's better than Pollard)
9.)
Fourie du Preez vs Henry Pyrgos (again too obvious)
8.) Duane Vermeulen vs Adam Ashe (again too obvious)
7.) Schalk Burger vs Chris Fusaro (way more experienced)
6.) Marcel Coetzee vs Rob Harley (really dont know i think personally they're both good players)
5.) Victor Matfield vs Grant Gilchrist (more experienced)
4.) Lood de Jager vs Tim Swinson (never seen de Jager play at all so.)
3.) Jannie du Plessis vs Geoff Cross (just the better player)
2.) Bismarck du Plessis vs Ross Ford (really no competition here what so ever)
1.) Coenie Oosthuizen vs Al Dickinson (sums it all)

yeah were f**Ked, tell me if there is any immediate changes needed cause i think we need this as accurate as possible

not necessarily. Eben is a very powerful individual but both these guys are young and from the same generation and that Gilchrist kid ain't exactly anorexic either. I think a guy like Matfield who knows it all, actually has known it all for about 10 years now already, who's considered an all-time great, has all the craftiness and experience of a true veteran like few locks have right now in the world; will create a bigger mismatch against the young Scot.
But I mean, it's not like we're at this point to talk about individual matchups in detail. I mean, S.A. is going to wrap this tour up nice and well and look forward to the All-Blacks, Wallabies and Argies next...I don't think we've exactly got a classic one on our hands tomorrow...

To be fair to Scotland they can naturally physically compete with pretty much every side in the world imo, especially in the tight and ruck retention in particular.

Its the lack of overall pace and skill in the team that really hurts them.

and the lacking off using our best players as we dont have a good attacking ability to use them

Nah I'm just kidding...

You sure you want to watch this Scotty ? the Boks are going to reach a fairly high number of points this afternoon, and it might sting the eyes.
