Will Climate Change cripple SH rugby?

According to this map of what countries will be worst effected by climate change, South Africa is dooooomed!

But while Australia, New Zealand and Argentina seem to avoid the same Doom, surely with their disperate populations travelling to away games will become more difficult as petrol becomes a rare commodity. Meanwhile the Six Nations, being at low risk of climate change and closer together geographically, are unlikely to suffer as much.

Could the next 50 years see the end of SH rugby as we know it? (this is not wishful thinking btw)

There is no climate change. The earth is in an 80-100 year sine wave where atmospheric temperature increases and decreases, we're just about to hit peak temperature. In 50 years time, we'll all be moaning about how twatting cold it is!

Haha, I was wondering how far we'd get into this thread before a climate change denier appeared.

Imagine the universe is the 1995 World Cup semi final. The world is Mike Catt and climate change is Jonah Lomu. That is what is coming, oh yes!

Someone who doesn't believe in Global Warming - that's a nice change. If scientists think the results of a climate change could be disastrous, shouldn't they be making stuff like recycling, aforrestation and usage of nuclear/wind/tidal energy mandatory?
"The World may be scarred from Climate Change if we don't do something but we're all too Goddamn lazy, so stuff it." <_<

Uhm, politicians run countries, not scientists. And if politicians made recycling, aforrestation and usage of nuclear/wind/tidal energy mandatory they'd lose most of their votes.

I know that. Perhaps I should have worded it differently.
That last part pretty sums up my last part - we're too lazy to give a ****, so we'll vote for another party.

to have 'climate change deniers' you also need 'climate change fanboi'. which is better, I wonder?

I other words, do you believe that "climate change" is a political spin used as an excuse to increase stealth tax rates to an already over-inflated global economy, or are you a doom monger who always sees absolute worst case scenario as a guarantee?

I'm personally in the former category.

I dont care about the weather as long as pussy taste the same :bana:

Nah on a serious note thou if that were to happen I think we'd be more worried about other things than the state of Rugby teams and such.

indeed!

you could believe the scientific evidence. Of course there is plenty of scientific evidence on both sides, but for some reason the media only reports on one. Which itself is enough to push me in your direction.

But I am skeptical of both 'pro' and 'against' camps. If the pro camps are right, then the steps they propose are totally inadequate. But some of them are useful ideas that we should just do anyway.

But the only thing that will cripple SH rugby is the Euro and the Pound. Pay them enough and they will all immigrate to Europe, become ineligble for selection (in NZ at least, and I think Aus?), and maybe even qualify to play for home nations teams.

Very good point, we could be heading for another ice-age. Think I remember watching a show about the next one coming soon.

its been raining in england for quite a bit the last few days and its suppose to be summer ><

I think in the long run, SA rugby is done in the long run anyway but its interesting to think about climate change and sport. Lets hope they will all migrate up and we can get one super league!!!

You are aware that the Premiership teams have a wage cap of something like £4m for the whole squad (most of which can't afford anyway) and an embargo only allowing one "foreign" player (which covers NZ, Aus, Asia and the Americas) to play for the club?

I think alot of our players have signed up for French clubs, do they have a cap?

No, although they have a funny system there where the clubs (which are independent entities) in some cases are funded by local authorities in return for developing local talent instead of recruiting from external areas. Only clubs such as Toulouse who can easily fill 40,000 stadia on a regular basis ever bring in the superstar names.

Or at least, that's my interpretation of how the French work.

Isn't Toulon owned by some rich business man? Pretty much the Chelsea of rugby the way they seem to throw around cash.

aye, I am, but the beauty of the residency laws is that once you've been here a few years you are no longer considered a foreign player, such as Matt Burke. Not sure if you have to have an English relative (parent or grandparent) to qualify for England or whether residency is good enough (as long as you have not played first team for another country of course). I remember Wales got into trouble when it turned out one of their ringers had supposedly qualified due to a Welsh grandparent, but it turned out the grandparent was English and just lived in Wales for a long time (or something like that).

Personally I think the GP and HC are fantastic competitions and all the foreign talent does contribute to that. But while I agree with bringing over the odd foreign star player to benefit from their experience is great, bringing over too many (and not even 'star' players) just strangles the local talent.
