the STORMERS thread

maybe this is exactly what he needs, on thing is he'll be closer to the ball, and most probably get the ball more than on the wing, which will have the effect of him not becoming over eager and not doing silly stuff...

One thing is for sure, if he wants to remain in the bok squad, he seriously needs to up his game... Give him a chance at least, maybe he'll be better than Umaga...

Possibly. I do hope it does. One has to give ti to him that he does thrive on involvement and has a very good work ethic for a wing (personally I was one of the lazy ones).

One the one hand give the man a chance, on the other, let him play centre and fail, he is no longer the best winger in any case and management is noticing this.
Then when is is no longer a fist choice for the team we give the Bulls a few milliion to take him back

Win Win for all

:p:p

nah you can keep him, JJ Engelbrecht was a good enough purchase from you guys to satisfy our "they-take-a-has-been-we-take-a-star-in-the-making" policy....

Habana made his debut as a centre for the Boks, that's where he started out when he played for the lions... Jake White used him at wing because of lack of pace by the other team members. I personally think this would be a better move than JP Pieterson at centre...

@TRF darwin: How can you not like wings playing centre?? some of best guys in the business made that switch during their long careers. Tana Umaga, Stirling Mortlock, Jean De Villiers, Jaque Fourie... to name a few.

Because a quality wing and a quality centre should have very different mind-sets. When a wing gets the ball the first thing they should think is 'how can I score from here', while a centres first thought should be 'how can I distribute the ball so that my team can score from here'. Often when a wing plays at centre their distribution isn't near as good as it should be. This is not to say that they wont pass (or pass accurately), but often they will only pass if there is nothing on for themselves, even if they have a wing in a better position. If they do pass it is often to early, or too late, and their finishing ability can at times be wasted at centre. Switching from wing to centre on defense is even more difficult - they have to make far more difficult decisions on defense, and are often even responsible for organizing the backline defense.

Because of this, playing a wing at centre is seldom successful. There is the odd wing that excels at centre, but these are the exception, rather than the rule. Of those that you listed, the only one that I would consider that has really changed from a wing to a centre is Umuga. Mortlock has always been a centre for the Brumbies - he was simply shifted to the wing (and fullback) early on in his Wallaby career as they had so much quality in the midfield. I can't comment on Fouries age-grade rugby / Currie Cup career, but when he started at Super Rugby level (in 2003) he played exclusively as a fullback, which a position that requires far more distribution ability than wing. The next season (2004) he played the whole year at centre - I've always considered him a fullback/centre, not a wing. Likewise when de Villiers hit the Super Rugby scene he played a mixture of wing and centre in his first season (2006), then played almost exclusively as a midfielder in 2007. So while the likes of Mortlock, Fourie, and de Villiers are capable of playing on the wing, they had all been playing centre at a young age, and I have always considered them as centres that can play wing (or fullback in Fouries case) rather than wings that can play centre.

Reading's between the lines; based on the friendly matches and some of the comments that Alistair Coetze has made I get the impression he doesn't feel that JP du Plessis is good enough for Super Rugby at the moment, and I think this "habana to centre" idea stems from a lack of a good replacement centre.

I'm all for giving young talent a chance but if they aren't good enough they aren't good enough.

He didn't get any chances with the Rebels as well. Certainly eems like he is either very unlucky not to get chances or cannot get the coaches' interest going. Anyway it does not bode well for the Stormers should either of JdV or JdJ get injured.

So Deon Fourie and now Rynhardt Elstadt have suffered injuries pre-season that'll keep them out for a significant time and Bekker, Vermeulen, De Jongh and Duvenhage are still carrying a bit of ****le (will start playing soon but these injuries flare up again easily). In additions to that both Joe Pietersen and Nick Koster have picked up knocks and aren't practising ATM as a precaution while Grant is still in Japan for a while yet and the Fury won't be coming back from Japan.

Can any Stormers supporters please give me something to be optimistc about!?

now chill

but then again from the start of the year you want to be negative and have just about written them off without a single game being played whilst concentrating on every bit on pre season pessimism.
I am not going to try and convince you otherwise, it is your own prerogative.

I for one can't wait for the tournament to start and if my team does not perform to my best wishes I will just be happy to see them again and I know they will be there or there about, like always
Unconditional support, forever

Yes, well, unconditional support from my side as well but, unfortunately, not boundless optimism T.T. And you havn't mentioned a single positive I could take some heart from T.T

As a non-supporter of the Stormers, can i give you something optimistic to cheer you up?

Your team will NOT be wearing PINK rugby jerseys this season!!!

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has revealed that line out specialist Andries Bekker is in line to return to Super Rugby against the Lions at the end of the month.

rugbyweek

Coetzee says that the break in Super Rugby for the June Internationals has been good for them as the players have been able to recharge both mentally and physically.

“We had a massive run in to the break, playing the Sharks and Bulls away.†said Coetzee on the Stormers website.

“We had a number of injuries and our guys were tired . The break came at a great time for us and the cherry on top was the win at Loftus to end that phase of our season. â€

“We used the first week of the off period to give the guys a full break from the rigours of the competition. A little R and R and time for the body to recover from the ****les. Week two saw us look to do strength and conditioning work. â€

“It’s something you can only really do pre-season and it was really good to be able to focus on this element at this stage. We will undoubtedly see this pay off as we progress in the competition. This last week we have used for rugby specifics combined with conditioning work.â€

“Mentally I felt the guys were fatigued by the end of the of our last league game at Loftus. A break from the competition has been good for us both mentally and physically. The guys are now really focussed on getting the job done and are hungry again for competition phase.â€

With a number of players up with the Boks, a contingent of the victorious WP Vodacom Cup players are training with the Stormers squad.

“We have regular feedback from our guys with the Boks and at this stage all are doing well. On the home front, Andries Bekker has made great progress and should be good-to-go come the Lions. â€

“Duane is firmly on track with his rehab and remains set for a return for any potential play-offs.

“Schalla’s progress has however been slower than hoped and it is unlikely that both he and Koster will be available for the Lions game.â€

“As cover, we have been working with Don Armand and Tyrone Holmes, from the Province squad, whilst Jebb Sinclair is due back with us next week and Kolisi will return from the Bok camp.

“Unfortunately Elstadt is also not available for the Lions game, given his one week ban for picking up 3 yellows.†said the coach.

“The Squad is focussed and hungry to get back into competition mode. There is still a lot of rugby to be played in the competition and we are well positioned, which really excites the guys.

“We will certainly look to capitalise now and every player knows exactly what is required of him individually and from the team as a whole.†concluded the coach.

Actually glad it is S15 times again as the internationals just frustrates me.
Bekker and Koster will not be ready for this weekend and Elstadt is on a one game ban so we will have a patch solution at 7 again this weekend.
Against the Lions without a coach, mind you they might just be stronger without Mitchell and his scare tactics

Also glad to see the Stormers again just a bit worried that the injuries havn't cleared up yet. These last 3 games would have been just the run-in the guys coming back from injury could have used.

It'll be interesting to see which team we play against the Lions on the weekend. Possibly we can afford to rest a few Springboks. We shouldn't underestimate the Lions- just look at the Sharks- but some of those players need rest desperately. JdV and Etzebeth have been heavily involved in the test series and havn't had much rest prior to the tests and Kitshoff has played 5 games in 2 weeks with the u20's.

Elstadt is suspended but I'd still rest Etzebeth seeing as Bekker is back and Roux is a classy lock to have as 4rth choice.

Hopefully Burger and Koster will be back the next game. So, what we are probably looking at:

1 Deon Carstens
2 Tiaan Liebenberg
3 Brok Harris
4 Quinn Roux
5 Andries Bekker
6 Deon Fourie
7 Siya Kolisi
8 Don Armand
9 Dewald Duvenhage
10 Peter Grant
11 Bryan Habana
12 Juan de Jongh
13 JP du Plessis?
14 Gio Aplon
15 Joe Pietersen

Roux did not train on Monday - not sure why but this guy is going to make it big one day
Etzebeth and Steven should take arest - Etsebeth has a sore ankle any case

I will not play Fourie or anyone else out of position on 6, play Armand or one of they younger guys - let them learn from this
JP - yup, so much talk of the lad but have not seen him in action yet, Marchell Brackie also a good option and Habana as a stop gap approach if needed.
Think the Canadian guys is still with us till the play-offs so 8th man is covered
