I have had some people contacting me asking why I have the Crusaders only in second place with the Reds in first. They have argued that the Crusaders on 30 points, with a differential of +129 ought to be ahead of the Reds, also on 30, with a differential of only +84.

There are also a number of other tables around the internet showing the Crusaders 1st and Reds 2nd.

They are all wrong. A new rule for teams on the same points has been introduced this year.

Here are the tie-breaker criteria for Super Rugby

[textarea]If two or more teams are equal on points in any position on either the Conference or the Combined standings at any time during the regular season, their ranking will be determined by the following:

1st. Most wins from all matches

2nd. Highest aggregate points difference from all matches

3rd. Most tries from all matches

4th. Highest aggregate difference in tries for and against from all matches

5th. Coin toss (used only to determine finalists)[/textarea]

Reds have six wins, the Crusaders have only five, so the Reds are ahead.

so your basically saying you put the reds first because there was an earthquake in christchurch. got ya :p

I love point number 5

Some people would say " Make them have a penalty shoot-out or something", but the chances of all four of the previous points happening is so extreme you might as well add a further factor of chance

This is interesting, especially the matches won in place of points difference, could make a hell of a difference at the end of the season

Its a long bow to draw, because the Competititon Rules were already in place before the earthquake, but basically, yes. If it wasn't for the earthquake, the Crusaders would have played the Hurricanes, and would probably have beaten them, giving them a win instead of a draw and putting them in first place.

Excellent topic as it explains enough for those who did not know.<O:p</O:p

Good to know that, was wondering myself too.

So to get it straight only the top two sides from each conference qualify?

No

The top side from each conference qualify, then the next three in order of table points from any Conference.

Looking at the table as it stands today...

...if the Waratahs had lost to the Force with no bonus points this weekend just gone, they would be on 22 points, so the table would look like this..

... so they would drop out, the Sharks move up to 5th and the Highlanders move into 6th. Both the Sharks and the Highlanders have the same table points (25) and the same number of wins (five) so their ranking is sorted by the second criteria (points differential)

Ahhh gotcha ... damn for a second there thought the Rebels had a shot

matters little right now, I think everyone knows on form the crucaders are the #1 team right now though the reds results have been impressive this last one in particular. I just hope that one missed game against the canes doesn't mean the difference between #1 on the table and #2 or #3 at the end of the season, that will be a real shame.

as far as teh table goes this weekend ther are a couple of big games on saturday with the Blues facing the Tahs and the Bulls playing the reds.

The Blues can do the highlanders a big favour by beating the tahs and not only will they consolidate their position if the highlanders can beat the rebs it will left them up over the Tahs.

Other game is the bulls vs. the reds. On Form the reds should take it but the bulls will be out for revenge so you never know. They surely cant be that bad two weeks in a row?

Great explanation Cooky, there's some usually quite reliable sites that have the table wrong

Well there's the return matches against all of the Aussies sides to come yet, so if they win most of those, they're in with a shot ... not taking anything away from the likes of the Reds performances, but it would be nice if at least one of the bottom 3 Aussie sides gave the Reds and the Tahs a bit of competition - they are getting (as many of us suspected they would) an armchair ride at the moment

The Reds have a pretty good record at home, although returning from South Africa may negate some of that advantage ... I think the Reds will run the Bulls off their feet.
