While an exhibition mode can be nice when you just want to play a quick game with a buddy or random opponent, there needs to be something more robust. Thus, I think there is a need for a tournament/league mode. A group of friends (2-8?) could create a league, and play a season online against each other, then have playoffs/championship. The system would track stats and perhaps even generate rudimentary match reports for the entire league to view (maybe even have an option to spectate others' matches). Teams could also make trades (1:1, 1:many). Guys could even create custom teams by having a preseason draft from the entire player list. It would be pretty involved for the users, but I think if it was a robust enough system with some cool features, that people would definitely invest their time in it. The only problem would be in scheduling -- there would have to be a way to guarantee that both teams in an upcoming match would coordinate a time to both be online in so as not to hold up the rest of the teams... maybe the league admin could set the max. interval between a user's matches (maybe from 1 hr to 1 week depending on how quickly they want the season to be played); or maybe the admin sets a weekly time for all games to be played (i.e. Sunday at 2 p.m.) and if a guy doesn't sign on to play his game, then the opponent can option a forfeit or a reschedule for later in the week. Any other thoughts on this? I don't play FIFA or Madden, so maybe all this is pretty standard in online play. Any other thoughts on what HB should include in an online mode?
Online play, as numerous people have mentioned, is essential. Elaborating on that: I think there needs to be more than a simple online exhibition mode.
