Springboks captain John Smit has torn ligaments in his right arm and is likely to miss out on this year's Rugby World Cup. This still needs to be verified, but if things don't change, it seems Victor Matfield might captain the side, with Bismarck du Plessis moving into the hooker position.

More info still to follow....

I'm not celebrating his injury, but could this possibly be one of the best things to happen to SA for the RWC?

I heard the same news about Frans Steyn, however I'd like to see Frans make it to the RWC this year.

I was thinking that too....

Du Plessis is a better hooker, and he's pretty poor as a prop
Other than his leadership, SA won't miss him - but he'll still be there and be able to shout at them before the match and at half time

If he is injured he should still go to the world cup to give support to the squad

Great news re-Smit. Bad re-Steyn. Smit has been rubbish since 2009 and clearly not good enough anymore. He´d the fourth best RSA hooker in my opinion and also not good enough to play prop.

François Steyn is a huge loss if its true. An utterly huge loss as there are no real replacements, just wingers to play there like Gio Aplon. Lambie could work but, again, it would be makeshift.
