Hi Guys,

I'm planning to try to make a potjiekos, the little q I have is regarding the liquid you add to the meat. In my recipe it's indicated coca cola. What other options do you have ?

Cheers.

Well, you have a lot of room to play with, it's generally down to the makers preferences, but ultimately most importantly what meat are you using?

I mean you are nae gonna be using coca-cola for a curry flavoured potjie, but I can say I have seen everything from just water to Sprite (fizzy drink), beer to vodka, pineapple juices to tomatoe paste (my preferred one when making oxtail/ beef), people using enough oil they may as well be deep-vat frying the stuff and all sorts of weird and wonderful things.

This looks like a decent site, have a look here

use a south african lager or red wine... i've never made potjie but beer or wine always adds nice flavour to a stew

What about Pepsi? :p

Must be a chicken potjie if they using coke.
I'd also recommend a lager or red wine. Chicken stock mixed in as well.

Just remember folks, dinnae give stuff from a potjie that has a higher alcohol content than methylated spirits to small kids.

There is a reason there are at times separate medicines for adults and children. At a Sharks game (before the game) a potjie was being made and the cooks were a little too enthuseastic with the amount of beer they put in, next day the youngsters who ate from were sick from alcohol poisoning.

LordHope's health and safety tip for the day. :D

Aight, nearly got it perfect. The meat is tender and lovely sweet but with a little spicy aftertaste. only used 1 can of coke, added some water. Yummie.

I think I earned my SA green card. Next on the list is the Pepsi chicken. :)

Chicken potjie is the best, sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots and lots of other lovely mmm... ****! Now I want potjie!

Probably because it's summer and I'm a Capie but I love a good West coast seafood potjie with as much cream and as good a bottle of white wine as you can afford.

EDIT: a must have for any potjie is a nice chunk of potbread to mop up your plate (which should be drenched)

I chuck a ton of cream into lamb and game potjies as well. Rich and creamy with mushrooms, onions and potatoes.
