Russia, who made their Rugby World Cup debut last month, plan to bid for the sport's premier event in 2023, the Russian Rugby Union has said.
"During our board meeting RRU president Vyacheslav Kopyev stated that Russia would lodge a formal bid to host the World Cup in 2023," the union said on its website (www.rugby.ru).
"The Russian team had a respectable showing in New Zealand, scoring eight tries - a great achievement for the World Cup debutants. Still, we fell short of our main objective - we could not win against the United States."
The Russians, as expected, lost all four of their group matches. Their other defeats came against Australia, Ireland and Italy, prompting the resignation of coach Nikolay Nerush.
England will host the 2015 World Cup with Japan staging the tournament four years later.
The game's profile has steadily risen in Russia in recent years and the world's largest country by area has also been awarded the rugby sevens World Cup in 2013 with the sport making its Olympic debut in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
"One of our objectives is to win the rugby sevens World Cup in 2013 and also compete in a (15-a-side) World Cup on a regular basis," the RRU said.

The preview magazine to the RWC mentioned that they were intending to build 5 (I think it was 5) purpose built rugby stadiums for the sevens world cup so they'll definately have the stadiums. guess they could use soccer/football stadiums too

I think it would be good for world rugby to expand the game beyond the traditional countries. The one complaint people have about rugby union is its predictability, at least where top tier teams are concerned. I'd like to watch every game without knowing the outcome, rather than knowing the ones I could avoid.

Argentina would be a better choice than Russia, though.

The problem with this is... What if Russia don't even make RWC 2023?! How embarrassing would that be.

I don't think we should worry about who's hosting the 2023 world cup before the 2015 edition has finished at least. Although I would rather Argentina or Italy have it.

I don't really mind where it goes, as long as it's somewhere new (and can guarantee decent crowds)

Argentina would be ideal, but Russia would also be good - USA/Canada I think would struggle to fill a lot of the matches
Italy would be good, but I'd rather it went to Argentina/Russia

I agree with this Olly, I think we would sell out our own games and most of the tier one nations but I would be really worried about sales to a game like Georgia vs. Romania for instance.

Also a RWC here in September/October would be going head to head with the beggining of the NFL season, the MLB playoffs and in Canada the stretch run of the CFL, all events that draw big crowds to the stadium. Not to say I wouldn't want it to happen at some point but even 2023 would be early for this.

I wonder if some of the racism problems we see in Russian football extend to rugby or will extend to rugby?

That would be a big thing for me, considering there are obviously going to be dark skinned players in most teams.

I'd prefer to see it hosted by Argentina or the United States and/or Canada to be honest. I don't think Russia would be prepared, nor do I believe they will be prepared for the football world cup. There are still too many problems in Russia to make tourists feel unsafe.

Russia? come on really ? can't think of a worse place for rugby world cup I think Spain and Portugal will be better hosts than the vodkas

No way they'll get it unless they bribe tons of people like they usually do.

I like the Spain/Portugal idea. I'm not sure they'll be that interested and it could be a loss maker, but if you can get them involved it'd be a lovely place to watch it. Other problem is no big custom built rugby stadiums, and with the football season being on at the same time it might be difficult to get to use the pitches... if there's a will there's a way though.

I wouldn't really want to go to Russia tbh.

As long as it's not somewhere like Qatar, I mean really who the heck would want to put their premier event in a locale like that......oh wait.....

Sole.. 187.. The Host Nation automatically qualifies.

Oh true. So that's why they want it so they can auto-qualify.. Cheeky buggers haha.

Russia isn't the best idea. As someone suggested, Argentina would be better.

Not going to happen, not in 2023 anyway.

Bare in find that Russia were to bid for 2015 and 2019 only to cancel as they wanted to concentrate on getting the 2013 Sevens. They succeeded and are to host well but will not be awarded 2023, no way. The next European host is going to be Italy, this is a guarantee. The countries involvement in the Six Nations, Heineken Cup and Celtic League means it is a known quantity. The proximity to France, Ireland and the U.K adds to its appeal. Not to mention its status as having played in every Rugby World Cup and having come close to the Quarter Finals, a one point loss to Scotland in 2007 denying the Italians.

Russia need to convince Europe and the world first and the next decade will be key to this. More tours to more places, more incoming tours too. Get a Moscow side into the Amlin Challenge Cup is a must. Have Russia play more internationals in general.

Argentina will host 2023. www.rugbyworldcup-argentina2023.blogspot.com is not a pipe dream. Los Pumas can play anywhere in the country and fill the stadiums. Its a cheaper destination than New Zealand or Australia and money there goes far. If New Zealand got 80,000 in 2011 (which they say they did) then Argentina can certainly get 120,000 in 2023. Direct flights to all tier one rugby countries make it even easier. A heineken in New Zealand was a rip-off at NZ$8 in a bar A cheap one was 3 for NZ$20! I couçdnpt believe it! In Argentina a beer is less than half the price and in Argentine pesos!

BTW with second tier and third tier sides getting more power the IRB will move to rotate World Cup´s. Watch this space....

I don´t think much else to the following will happen....

2023 Americas (Argentina)
2027 Europe (Italy or Russia or France)
2031 Africa (South Africa or.....)
2035 Europe (Russia or Ireland & Scotland or France)
2039 Oceania or Asia (Australia)
2043 Europe (Ireland and Scotland or France)
2047 Americas (USA)

Currently considering the pattern of tournament hosting, it seems more likely that a European nation will host in 2023. Perhaps it will be Italy in 2023 and Argentina or the United States/Canada in 2027. That isn't to say the IRB won't change this, but it is something to point out. I can definitely see South Africa hosting again in 2035 (40 years since their last).

I'd like to see it hosted by Italy, provided the areas without, typically, any interest in Rugby could fill the necessary stadia.

Even if Russia do have the stadia to host the cup, they're incredibly spread out, not conducive to fan touring, at least not until they have a better infrastructure for rugby in my opinion.

I agree that an Italian or Argentinian RWC would be a great idea, the Home nations won't be hosting one for a long time because of 2015, by process of elimination it can't be NZ, Aus, RSA or France either from previous hostings.... Next two teams just on the IRB rankings would have to be Italy and Argentina.

Personally I'd be inclined towards Italy, the Stadio Flaminio always has a terrific atmosphere even when Italy are struggling, I'm sure they could get behind most teams for the event.

Russia are just too small as a rugby nation. It was crazy enough them getting the Football World Cup.

It would be 28 years since South Africa had last had the cup. They would hardly be out of contention. The IRB may want a rugby nation to host the cup after Japan is hosting in hosting it in 2019.

Wouldn't say that's a biased opinion <_<
