With Rugby Challenge 3 coming out we are all excited about this. Its pretty cool that we are finally getting a game in the right direction, and something us rugby fans deserve.

But in saying this, there were many things from RC2, that we loved and loved to hate...

So what would we like to see improved on...discuss it here...This is not a wish list but more improvements to the already existing game play from RC2.

I would love to see...

1) A play around or slider with injuries, this was really annoying to see only on / off option, I never got enough injuries to 'manage' my team and allow other players time in the spotlight. Rugby 08 had a slider, be a nice improvement to the game. Perhaps like rugby league live 2, low, medium high option. Injuries add a great experience to the game. And would allow people to set it to what ever they liked and what they preferred. Then perhaps an option for them to see a specialist, you would pay more money, but then the weeks injured would be less. This was in rugby challenge 2006. (even that had a simple player progression and options to see a doctor or specialised to fix your injured players quicker).

Also, it be nice to see players perhaps have either a minor in major injury. A major one would mean they are out for how ever many weeks. (I liked in career mode it told you how long they were out for, like rugby 08). But a minor injury could mean that player could continue to play, but may get a major injury and it be worse. That would add a little bit more to the gameplay, especially if it was a do or die match and your top player had a minor injury with 20 minutes to go, do you sub them off or risk it to help you improve your chances to win the game, knowing they could be out for the quarter, semi or final, or the following season, injuries are key to a successful game.

2) When the ball bounced in the field of play and then bounced over the slide line, the opposition would always grab the ball before it hit the ground, meaning it would be your ball again...kinda funny but annoying in a game.

3) Even though the off load was brought down with the sliders, there would still be times the players would offload or pass somehow, perhaps improvement on this would be better.

4) Tackling someone in the try line area, once that player went over the line it was game over for the try.

5) Allowing some counter attacking with the fullback when kicked to him, once I got the ball I was always being rushed by 'offside' players who weren't called up by the ref, "Ref"!

6) Don't get me wrong, I loved the feel of the game when choosing different attacking and defensive options. But speaking of defensive options...when ever I had my line in wide, it wasn't wide, or 1 on 1 situations, I would (my wings) sometimes be left hanging to far away, as they went pass me, hoping my fullback was in the right direction and place to make the final tackle.

7) Either the kicking needs to change drastically or it be nice to see some different things happening. I remember playing on hardest difficultly and scoring tries under the posts, and just moving my kicker right under the post, as if i mucked up the kicking aspect (stopping the little white line on the tiny blue line) it would go over regardless. Perhaps a revisit into the rugby 08, with power and accuracy or something different. I felt like if you got the white line on the blue line you were pretty much sweet, unless u mucked up the wind which wasn't that hard.

8) Kicking distance, wow, 40-45 meters out you had no chance unless you had wind behind you. Short ball. The international players can land those kicks, 50 - 60 come on.

9) Career mode, buying players, with out a player progression this was a no show, why would I spend $40 - 50,000 on a rookie if they wern't going to improve, this was a really hard thing to deal with. In rugby 08, Woosah released a rugby editor, allowed you to change your stats (like RC and RC2) but then it would co-inside with the current career you were playing. Tana Umaga was speed 75 in that game, when I played career mode, after every season I put the top 3-5 players with most tries a point. Eventually I had Tana move from 75 to in the 90's. Plus I was now playing against other players who had also increased speed, power, strength, goal kicking etc. Was great. A lot of work but good times. Be nice to either see player progression, or, If I have a current career mode, once I change a stat I want to see that update in the career I am playing. At lease then we could have our own manual progression.

10) At the end of each season, I never knew how much $ i would receive at the end. E.g. Nice, I won the super 15 ***le and I only received $300,000 or another time $700,000, thats a big difference, it was hard to manage and not 'know' the full details of how much money you had. I liked the career mode (to a point, about 4 seasons then it repeated, see number 11) but it got confusing and frustrating when I had 25 people in my squad and had many players wanting new contracts but not enough money to fill them, if I knew how much money I was getting then this wouldn't of happened. Rugby 08 / 06 had money for each match clearly shown, simple but effective.

11) The career mode repeated, same matches in the same order, (not completely sure if that was right with super 15 and international) but it did on the grandest stage of them all. The world Cup. Each year it was on, it was the same 6 teams in a pool. Not 5, but 6. I don't mind 6, thats cool but I played wales in the first pool match each and every world cup over 3-4 RWC. Plus all the good teams (the top ten nations) had sometimes 4 in a pool. All good to have 3 in there (look at the 2015 world cup, pool of death) but make it change up. Just randomise it, it doesn't have to fit any old RWC format just make it up!

12) I know licensing was an issue, but not being able to transfer players who had stars besides their names, was really annoying.

13) The top "stars" didn't make an impact, impact players would be nice.

14) Red and Yellow cards! Sure a red card came up in my career mode, maybe 2-3 times in 10 seasons, and I had to do many 'high tackles' to get one, (mostly for the achievement or to see what would happen) and with the SAME player that had had the yellow card. Sure they got banned for a bit, but they came back.

Red cards need to be a bit more of a punishment than just a few weeks off.
Now yellow, man, I would be so good to see a email in the email section (ha, emails, thats number 15) talking about the player have a judiciary hearing, and seeing them either get banned, or get off from the hearing. Would be so much better, each yellow card should lead to something like this. Similar to number 1, the more players you have either injured, banned or have done something off field would make for such a better rotation of players and not always be your 22 players you rely on. The other 8 players (if a squad of 30) or 18 being a squad of 40 doing nothing! It adds a manager roll as well as being the coach.

15) Hopefully final thing, was on a roll, each section reminded me of something else. Lol. Emails, I got the same email from McCaw saying how proud he was of making the final or winning it. Lets see some other things happening. Sponsorship (make them up, don't have to be official) saying let us sponsor your team heres some cash money, some goals to reach each session, this season you are expected to make the top 6 of the super 15. Doctors saying, at training this player was injured, and will miss a game or two, or players emailing you to discuss contracts, not getting game time, training them to be in a different position. Etc

I know the game won't be perfect, Im stoked its coming out, hell I will buy it and will enjoy it as well. But I don't want it going stale, a effective career mode is what makes you return to a rugby game. This wasn't a rant, perhaps you agree with some of the things I talked about, perhaps not. Thats fine, discuss it below. What have I missed, what do you agree on or not. Be nice to see some of these things addressed is all.

Cheers. Lets hear em!

great points

Apart from the above, i'd like to be able to control the trajectory of place and drop kicks and also when you scored right in the corner, the ball was always lines up with the 5 metre line instead of being closer to the touch line.

I'd like the injuries and cards to be more realistic too. players should stay down until the next stoppage of play, sometimes they're attended to and carry on, sometimes they're taken off and replaced. also if you replace a player with one that doesn't have that position listed against them there should be some sort of degraded performance of that player as they are not familiar with that position. you should also get penalised for scrum and maul collapses, like when you get the sequence right and it pushes the opposition scrum back, they should collapse and give away a penalty. get penalised inside your own 22 a few times and off you go to the bin etc.

I just want to see a removal of licensing restrictions. Was literally the reason I returned RC2.

It would be cool if they had a career mode like in Fight Night where you do training drills and you can raise the players stats after whatever training exercise you do. I'm talking about a made up team in a career mode though, I guess there could be an option to make your own team or use an existing team in a career mode

I noticed in RC2 many things in the game weren't explained in the training tutorials. You actually had to read the booklet to see a lot of the controls haha. If I turn on the game and see a training mode I'm going to assume its all covered in there and just go through those. It wasn't until a long time later I realized there was a lot more to it.\

I really like RC2 though. My main gripe with it is all the knock ons that happen

Oh yeah there was also the grubber kicks. When you grubber the ball is too easy to control, it doesn't bounce around like a normal rugby ball. So it was too easy to just grubber and keep toeing it along, it would just bounce in a straight line as if it was a soccer ball. Don't know if its too hard to make it bounce like a rugby ball though

Also how people could throw dummies and go all the way to the try line with it

Some kind of stats at the end of the game for all players like what rll2 had, metres gained, tackles made, man of the match etc.

Fix the sub numbers, small thing but really annoying!

Being able to dive for a try from a couple of metres out.

Being able to manually dip the shoulder into a tackle to give a more powerful break tackle than a hand off, instead of the game doing this for you, especially for forwards

seperate buttons

id like seperate options to pass to forwards or backs from rucks. much like there was on RWC 2011 game (im aware its not the same developer as RC), that feature was nice, as you could pass to a forward to smash his way over the gain line close to the ruck.

Pretty sure that was a feature in RC2, I can't remember what button it was (Either the d-pad or the bumpers). It was a good feature as it meant the player getting the ball ran onto it

i know what you mean, left or right on the d-pad (comes up send left or send right). only trouble with this was it just seemed to pass whoever was on that side of the ruck, which could still be backs etc. at least thats what i found. so you'd end up having a winger running onto the ball then getting smashed

A more tactical side to the game. Winning penalties from scrums or forcing players to hold on. It gets boring when all final scores are multiples of 7.

Definitely, but....

you should also get penalised for scrum and maul collapses, like when you get the sequence right and it pushes the opposition scrum back, they should collapse and give away a penalty. get penalised inside your own 22 a few times and off you go to the bin etc.

hopefully this would fix that.

Something else which I would've liked to have seen (but we won't because screenshots have already been released showing this) is more position specific stats. E.g. the only stat relating to a prop's specific skill set was strength in RC2, I would add in scrummaging technique, scrummaging power, rucking and mauling. Locks and backrows need a 'jumping' stat, all players should have a 'jackaling' stat, plus there should also be more kicking stats. I suggest 'goal kicking power', 'goal kicking accuracy', drop kicking power', 'drop kicking accuracy', 'punting accuracy' and 'punting power' (by punting I just mean general kicks out of hand which aren't drop kicks).

More stepping/hand off/dummy animations would be brilliant, plus mauls should be improved - if you're dominating someone else in a maul the ball shouldn't just pop out of the back like the rear most forward has just laid an egg, perhaps one of the opposing team could pull the maul down and concede a penalty?

I just want to see solid gameplay, I didn't really like the gameplay in rc2 so that stopped me from playing it.
I think the licences won't be a problem the fan hub will make up for that and give us players and teams with better likeness in looks and skills than we would have got in the game.
I can see alot of the licenced players/teams in the game getting swapped for ones that have been created as they would have had more care and attention put into them. Nothing against wicked witch but exact likeness of a player won't be a high priority when they will be making the game probably to come out to coincide with the world cup

I agree with you MR Tea, I would rather have solid gameplay that have a game come out at world cup time. I would wait than have a broken game sooner. Honestly Injuries need to be better, so much better. This is No.1 for me. Rugby 08 had enough to keep me happy. I am also worried that Wicked Witch have just re-used the RC2 engine (which they have of course) but made no changes to it, and added updated team strips, and missed the simple things we talked about. That would be a nightmare, it be like RC 2.5 instead of RC 3. But by far will be the best Rugby game in a long time.

In the demo, the licensed players look great but not the South Africans...hopefully its just a pre game thing cuz Id like to think they will not throw away likeness license and just make them look rather created.

Definitely, but....

part of the problem with the mauls is they go 10-15 metres before the ball comes out involuntarily. for scrums and mauls there should be some sort of "collapsing gauge" that if you get your scrum sequence right or bash the drive key harder than your opponent or opponent failes to commit enough players to the maul, and the scrum or pack gets pushed back at a certain rate, then they collapse and it's a penalty - kind of like what really happens in rugby.

I also like the idea of specific stats. currently you can put a scrum half in as a lock and he'll win a line out - realistically he shouldn't. the kicking stats are also good - and you should be able to designate a kicker and a long distance kicker ie. Mike Harris and Jack Debreczeni at the Rebels.

End "Licence restricted" players. Hated having to pick up a fake player nearly 80% of the time in career mode. Also a Be a Pro mode a la FIFA would be awesome.

I thought the RC2 rucking system was not that bad but i want the rucking stat to play a bigger role if i have 3 great loosies as my loose trio say daune vermeulen , alberts and sir richie the other team should hardly have ball to play with the rucking should be a major battle on its own , the scrumming should change alot if you push a scrum 5 meters it must collapse and concede a penalty and if you gou do button smashing it whould also concede a penalty agaisnt you ... mauls the same if you set and drive to fast you would collaspe and concede a penalty ..

Kicking need a major upgrade kicking power and accurecy and please please !!! N proper drop goal animation !!!! I never took drop goals beceause it looked terrible

More stats after the match like meters made line breaks tackles made and missed

More penalties in the game .. high tackles ... late tackles ... offside ... scrum penalties ... holding ... mayby obstruction ?! .. (mayby farfetched for now) but as mentioned above i dont want to win or lose by tries ... more penalties wil make the game more tactical and that is a element needed in RC

More animations for tackles , fend off and side steps ...

Weather should play a part .. dry pitch give you a fast running surface when playing in rain mayby more injuries and players speed is reduced and they tire faster slippery hands should that would force you to deploy a tight game in wet weather where kicking becomes super important

More yellow and red cards and more injuries

Player development , the more game the a player has the faster his stats improve and on a certain age they start to drop till the point of retirement .. career ending injuries ... mayby everytime a player is injuried all his stats drop by a few points depending on how severe the injury

If a player is played out of position there MUST be reduced stats for him

Home ground advantage when you play at home all your player stats for that match is mayby adding with 5 points

At the end of the season mayby a player of the year award

All these are great suggestions. I would add if a player gets injured, play continues with everyone running around him on the pitch. Like Rugby 08. It was fun to see if a guy was going to get run over . In RC1 and 2, play would stop immediately when someone got injured.

I have hopes that this game will be good, but to be honest of the screenshots released so far the graphics look EXACTLY the same as RC2 - not up to current gen standards at all and certainly don't reflect the improvement RLL3 is showing over RLL2.

There's a few things, but the grass in particular is a dead give-away - in RLL3 it looks like actual grass now, whilst in RC3 it just looks like concrete with a grass print.

Just had a brief interaction with the Wicked Witch on twitter, and I was basically told that the only thing they've updated for RC3 is textures and the ability for it to be displayed in 1080. Basically it'll be exactly like RC2 in look and feel.

I was prepared to buy the game, but that's a deterrent if you ask me unless of course if it's sold for $30. i'd pay $80 if there were game play enhancements as well as textures and graphics.
