Newcastle Falcons were impressive in every department as they made it three wins out of three this pre-season with a 21-3 victory over Edinburgh at Kingston Park.
The Falcons bossed the physical battle and underlined a killer instinct in attack with tries from Oliver Tomaszczyk and Rob Vickers earning them a deserved triumph.
And with Dean Richards slotting into the Kingston Park hot-seat early next week, there is a real sense of excitement around the North East at present.
Beating last season's Heineken Cup semi-finalists is sure to have put a marker down for rival Championship clubs targeting a promotion charge this campaign.
After trading penalties inside the first 10 minutes, it was the Falcons who issued the first hammer blow thanks to a try from Oliver Tomaszczyk.
Prop-forward Tomaszczyk, a summer signing from Worcester Warriors crashed over from close range following a period of sustained pressure which saw visiting flanker Dimitri Basilaia sin-binned for persistent infringements.
Full-back for the evening Jimmy Gopperth added the extras to give his side a deserved 10-3 lead with a quarter-of-an-hour on the clock.
The hosts thought they had scored a quick-fire double when winger Ryan Shortland crossed the whitewash five minutes later, only for referee Dave Pearson to bring play back for a forward pass in the build-up.
Tane Tu'ipulotu, who is enjoying his second spell on Tyneside sliced through the visitors' rearguard only for his looping pass to go a shade forward.
Despite the Scots showing attacks in small doses, the Kingston Park outfit stood firm and kept their shape to go into the break 10-3 ahead.
On 45 minutes Scotland international Rory Lawson made his Falcons bow against his fellow countryman, replacing Chris Pilgrim who continued his fine form at scrum-half.
In typical fashion Lawson showed his experience from the off, orchestrating affairs in the No.9 jersey and feeding the forward pack with good clean ball.
This lay the foundations for the Falcons to play some expansive rugby in the final third with the likes of Tu'ipulotu and Shortland underlining their prowess with ball in hand.
On 68 minutes Gopperth increased his side's advantage to 13-3 with a penalty from 30-metres out before repeating the feat moments later.
16-3 in front, the Falcons looked assured and in control as they aimed to make it three wins out of three this pre-season.
In the closing stages, tight-head James Hall had the enthusiastic crowd on their feet when he broke through two would-be tacklers to offload to Lawson 10 metres from the line. The former Gloucester man was hauled down just five-metres from the line and Edinburgh gained a reprieve thanks to the award of a penalty.
And in the last play of the game Rob Vickers rubber-stamped a confidence-boosting win, burrowing his way through to touchdown following a series of drives. Gopperth failed with the conversion but it palled into insignificance as the new era continued with a 21-3 win.
Head coach Peter Russell told the gathering media: "We want to send a warning out there but we have to be mindful and humble about where we want to go.
"It is going to be a long season and we want to really start well and I am generally pleased with where we are at the moment."
We will have more from Russell on Sunday as he talks to Falcons TV.
