Rugby's 10 worst refereeing howlers

No.3 - Paddy blows the whistle

on Fiji - 1999 World CupWayne Barnes fan Paddy O'Brien was once a fairly ordinary referee himself, which perhaps explains his fondness for his hopeless protege.

Paddy's darkest hour came at the 1999 World Cup when he railroaded the brave Fijians with a display so one-sided it may never be matched. Despite clearly being the better side on the day, the Fijians could do nothing right.

Despite fullback Alfred Uluinayau having a first-half try ruled out for a non-existent knock on, Fiji managed to claw their way to a 19-13 lead with just 10 minutes remaining. O'Brien, however, came to the rescue of the French, awarding them a penalty try from a scrum close to the Fiji line despite it being the French who clearly offended in the scrum.

"I thought Paddy had a great game," a young Wayne Barnes is believed to have said to his dad shortly after the game.

I love the final sentence, lol!

...Can you think of a reason why I should leave this thread open?

Because it's not offensive, abusive etc and is about rugby?

No point in closing it. Most threads if they're a bit daft just disappear into oblivion by the end of the day anyway.

Because it is inflammatory and provides no discussion points or evidence. It just has a damning ***le and a review of a match that occurred 12 years ago. It's pretty much as insightful as a thread called "Will South Africa poison the All Blacks again?".

No but I can think of a few reasons why you should close it, the leading one being that its just a wind-up for no good reason

Franky, I'm sick to death of all the personal attacks and bullshit insults hurled at POB by pig-ignorant wankers who have never picked up a whistle in their miserable lives, have not the first fvcking clue about the Laws of the Game, and have no idea what its like to be a referee.

Furthermore, these morons don't have the balls to put themselves in the the firing line (and it IS a firing line).

Just saying....

Fair points in threads do sometimes develop into arguments on TRF. This is merely a negative and derogatory "article" built on the premise of speculation masquerading as fact.

It's very obvious that anything insinuating that international referees deliberately allow personal biases to interfere in their performances is not something to welcome.

Describing current referees and their performances in complimentary or negative ways is obviously part of the criticism or praise that people expect to be able to make comment on. Even in those situations, describing them as having a personal bias is not fair or relevant comment without proof and therefore likely to incite.
