Here is the Samoan squad for the Pacific Nations Cup and to play Scotland this June
Loosehead Prop: Zak Taulafo
Hookers: Ole Avei, Steve Fuala, Patrick Leafa, Ti'i Paulo*
Tighthead Props: James Johnston, Census Johnston, Logovi'i Mulipola
Locks: Maselino Paulino, Joe Tekori, Kane Thompson
Flankers: Afa Aiono, Maurie Fa'asavalu, Alafoti Faosiliva, Chris Lowrey*, Taiasina Tuifu'a
Number 8's: Ofisa Treviranus, Richard Muagututia
Scrum Halves: Kahn Fotuali'i**, Jeremy Su'a, Nalu Tuigamala
Fly Halves: Ki Anufe, Patrick Faapale, Tusi Pisi*
Centres: Faatoina Autagavaia, Fautua Otto, George Pisi*, Male Sau, Isaia Tuifua
Wingers: David Lemi, Ken Pisi, Paul Perez
Full Backs: Lolo Lui, James So'oialo, Paul Williams

* Only available for Scotland match
** Only available for Japan and Scotland matches

Reserves: Levi Asifa'amatala, Greg Lealofi, Fa'alemiga Selesele, Ofisa Smith, Misioka Timoteo, Alatasi Tupou

Injured: Daniel Leo, Anthony Perenise, Manaia Salave'a

Unavailable for "family reasons":
Na'ama Leleimalefaga, Johnny Leota

Controversial absences:
Mahonri Schwalger
(the captain at the World Cup, the official word is that he is dropped because of his age which is now 33, but some other reports suspect it is because of his critisicm of the Samoan national team officials after the World Cup)

Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu (reports have said the IRB "asked him not to be selected", I'm sure we will hear about this on Twitter)

Other players absent from the World Cup squad: Tasesa Lavea, Filipo Levi, Seilala Mapusua, Junior Poluleuligaga, George Stowers, Sailosi Tagicakibau, Alesana Tuilagi

Shame Johnny Leota didn't/can't make it (his mother in law passed away recently, so presumably that's the reason why) - Not sure if he'd have made it anyway as George Pisi will surely have the 13 shirt nailed down as he's been on excellent form for Northampton.

Looking forward to the matches though - strong looking side, if not fully together for all of the matches.
Has Alesana Tuilagi retired from international rugby as well now?

EFS has already said on twitter that it's BS that the IRB said he can't play for them anymore. Seems like Samoa don't want him to play/the controversy he brings. Shame, as he is a talented player and he would've brought experience to the side, however he's in his 30s now (I think?) and they could have easily just left him out and said that he's too old or whatever.

I think it's ridiculous they dropped Schwalger. He's playing really well for the chiefs and the S15 isn't really a pussy competition.

If they really did drop him because of his age, which i can believe to be honest then i definitely can understand the decision. The only times where Samoa really need to perform are against the Tier 1 sides and in the world cup, the pacific teams do tend to try out youngsters in the PNC from what i can remember

read this article, it shows that the there are even more "old farts" in the Samoan Rugby Union than there are in the RFU

they made a complete lie about Fuimaono-Sapolu being blocked by the IRB by the way, which they have now admitted, and are also lying about dropping the likes of Schwalger and Mapusua due to age

it all seems to be purely because some of the players criticised the SRU after the World Cup

http://www.supersport.com/rugby/international/news/120522/Anger_over_Schwalger_axing

The axing of Samoa's rugby captain Mahonri Schwalger has prompted anger in the Pacific Island nation, with the largest daily newspaper calling him "the people's captain" and describing his ousting as "a comedy of errors and a sad tragedy."

The Samoa Observer said coach Stephan Betham had made a mistake in dropping World Cup captain Schwalger from the squad for next month's Pacific Nations Cup.

Betham had said that Schwalger was replaced because of "the age factor", as 31-year-old Schwalger was unlikely to be in Samoa's 2015 World Cup team so it was time to introduce younger talent.

Schwalger has been a standout player for the Waikato Chiefs in this season's Super 15 championship and he had said his axing was not because of his age but because he had criticised Samoa Rugby Union officials after last year's World Cup.

He had said the social activities of officials at the World Cup had disrupted the team's preparation for key matches and claimed team clothing and equipment had been sold for personal profit.

Schwalger said "I knew it would cost me my international career" but "if it means that the (Samoa) will go forward without me then that's a sacrifice I will take."

The Samoa Observer said Betham had offered only "veiled excuses" for omitting a player "playing the best rugby of his life."

"Perhaps someone should remind the folks at SRU that the people of this country are not stupid and that they should stop pulling these PR disasters," the Samoa Observer said. "It's an embarrassment for this country.

"The Manu Samoa (team), after all, is not owned by the folks running the Samoa Rugby Union. This is a team that's owned by the people of this country - the very people who gave their lunch money so that the team could attend the Rugby World Cup last year.

"Today it's fair to say there is hardly a soul out there that's not hurt and deeply offended by the decision."

The Samoa Observer said other World Cup players dropped from the squad -Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu, Seilala Mapusua, George Stowers and Alesana Tuilagi - had all supported Schwalger.

"Somebody within the SRU should explain," the newspaper said. "While we wait, the SRU should also take a leaf from Schwalger's book in terms of class, dignity and poise."

What's the Tonga squad? I don't know if "European" players are avalaible for Isotolo Maka...

I don't find anything... :(

I find it... http://www.planetrugby.com/story/0,25883,3830_7771131,00.html

Finau Maka, Sioane Tonga'uhia, Sona Taumalolo (he's playing with Chiefs), Taufa'ao Filise, Aleki Lutui, Semisi Telefoni, Aleki Lutui, Sione Timani, Samisone Fisilau, Suka Ufanga, Andrew Ma'ilei and Vunga Lilo are unavalaible.

Tonga Squad:
Forwards: 'Ofa Fainga'anuku, Tevita Mailau, Sila Puafisi, Kisi Pulu, 'Ilaisa Ma'asi, Viliami Pola, Joe Tu'ineau, Joshua Afu, Tukulua Lokotui, Sione Kalamafoni, Steven Mafi, Paula Kaho, Sione Vaiomo'unga, 'Osaiasi Pepa Koloamatangi, Viliami Ma'afu,
Backs: Taniela Moa, Thomas Palu, Kurt Morath, Eddie Paea, Sefa Vaka, Mafile'o Kefu, Siale Piutau, Kilifi Latu, 'Alipate Fatafehi, Fetu'u Vainikolo, Alaska Taufa, Daniel Kilioni, Viliame 'Iongi.

Big team. They need their overseas players to shine. Nobody important is missing at backs. But there is a real problem with props !! Why Tonga'uiha never plays for Tonga outside the World Cup. They must ban him. Taumalolo absence is suprising.

Steve Mafi and Josh Afu are coming back. Really great.

Eddie Jones has unveiled the list of players participating in the Pacific Nations Cup, 2012 edition.
Note the return of the iconic former captain, Takashi Kikutani (Toyota Verblitz). Back to back
Go Aruga (Suntory), who will play center. Four surprises with the coming of the young winger university Takenaka (Tsukuba, 19), the center Nakamura (Teikyo), the third line Tui (Panasonic) and Pillar Nagano (Yamaha).
For the rest it's classic, with again the presence of Fujita (Waseda), which we hope to see change on the ground to Pacific Island nations. Hirose is itself more than ever captain of the.

I always find it disappointing that Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga never seem to be able to secure their top teams for these tournaments. Japan is usually at full strength, but I noticed they too are missing a couple of key players (Horie and Tanaka), who are currently playing club rugby in Dunedin in the hope of making the Otago ITM Cup squad (which I'm sure they both will).

Despite missing a lot of players (like Fiji and Samoa) I quite like the look of the Tongan team. I was interested to see Tevita Mailau declare his allegiance to Tonga (as good choice in my opinion as he will never be an All Black). I'm picking Tonga to win the tournament this year.

A lot has been made of some senior players missing out on the Samoan squad, but most of those guys are replaceable. The the only real glaring weak position in the team is 2nd 5, so I would've kept Mapusua in there.

Our pack looks decent for the PNC, but the backs for the most part are untested at this level. The back 3 looks more assured, but everyone inside them are relatively new to the scene.

The PNC always is close in results, so it'll be another dog fight for the ***le this year. Tonga do look good there and you can never discount Japan who have a huge hop on preparation compared to the rest of the teams.

Interesting to see only one foreign player in the Japanese team. I guess it's not much of a surprise after the comments last year about the foreigners in the team.

That is one crappy Fijian squad

Things are going from bad to worse for Fiji these days, making Scotland and Romania's issues seem minor in comparison. On the better side of things at least we have both picked Japan on the Superbru Melhor!!!!!

Really looking forward to this tournament and pumped that Sportsnet World has picked up the coverage again this year in Canada. Japan are quality at home, but Tonga and Samoa are in play to win I would think, I'm picking Fiji to finish last.
