dont like it but understand it. trying to generate more sales by putting a shield around it. purely for marketing reasons.

Saw the badge leaked and was keen...now...not interested, worst jersey in a long time, that AIG logo just looks worse and worse

The crest is a turn on in my opinion. It blends in really well, it's aesthetical, and it effectively builds a bridge between past and present. I'd like to think that they'll keep it for future kits (just remove the present year and leave the emblematic 1904).
I do agree with you though, that the background design thingy is kinda unnecessary. Had they left it plain black, it would have been much more popular. But on the field, it will look just black, which is what we're all looking forward to seeing.

The crest looks like some sort of clipart, not specifically designed for the silver fern, don't know if i could do better but probably wouldn't have bothered if i couldnt

I like it, the only adjustment I will make is to take a black felt tip marker and carefully blacken the bright white letters AIG.
That will force the sponsor into the background and highlight the shield a little more at the same time.

It's amazing how a nice shirt design can be ruined by a crappy sponsor's logo.

Take a look at these three shirts from recent seasons at my club. In all cases I like the shirt (particularly the multi-coloured one which is a centenary shirt for European games) but hate the sponsor logos on the first two. I can just about tolerate the third one (Jewson logo).
