Cheetahs loosehead Wian du Preez says he is considering a short-term deal with Irish club Munster. Du Preez was the form loosehead in the Currie Cup this season and was part of the Cheetahs’ front row that was considered the best scrumming force in the competition.

However, he was a shock exclusion from the Springbok squad for the end-of-year tour.

Munster, who are struggling with a prop injury crisis, have now approached Du Preez to help bolster their front row.

‘We are still busy with negotiations but the deal seems to be a positive one,’ Du Preez told keo.co.za. ‘It will be a great experience as I will play with and against international players and I’ll be exposed to the wet conditions in Europe.’

Forwards coach Barend Pieterse said he will be happy if the deal goes through.

‘Wian is already a good player and he will only get better,’ said Pieterse. ‘It’s a shame he didn’t get a Springbok call-up, but if this move works out, it will be a great experience for him.’

If Du Preez signs the the short-term contract, he will join Springbok centre Jean de Villiers for five European Cup matches and three Irish League games. The prop will be back in time to play in the Super 14.

Details of the transfer will be confirmed on Friday afternoon.

If true, I guess it means Marcus Horan and Darragh Hurley are out for a few months.

Looks promising, he sounds like a good player with a good attitude, and we do badly need a prop.

Well the deal has been sealed.

Cheetahs loosehead Wian du Preez has signed a two-month deal with Irish club Munster.

‘The deal has been sealed and I will be leaving next weekend for two months,’ Du Preez told keo.co.za. ‘It will be a great experience. In the last three years, Munster have won the European Cup twice. So it’s good to know I’ll be playing for one of Europe’s powerhouses.’

Du Preez added that he is looking forward to featuring alongside players like Springbok centre Jean de Villiers.

‘It will be great to meet up with an excellent player like Jean. There are also many British and Irish Lions and other internationals in the squad, so I will learn a lot during my time there.’

Forwards coach Barend Pieterse said he is happy Du Preez has received this opportunity.

‘Wian is already a good player and he will only get better,’ said Pieterse. ‘It’s a shame he didn’t get a Springbok call-up, but this will be a great experience for him.’

Du Preez is expected to feature in five European Cup matches and three Irish League games. The prop will return on the 25 January, in time for the Cheetahs’ Super 14 preparations.

I know nothing about him but he seems to have good pedigree.

I noticed this about Marcus Horan in the Irish squad announcement press release:
It is expected that he will be available to Munster and Ireland after the New Year.

Hopefully he's okay - whatever he has must be pretty serious and thankfully every precaution is being taken. If the rumours are true and he can't continue, du Preez must be an option to sign a long term deal (after the Super 14 and next years Currie Cup). Another option could be some kind of swap deal with Connacht involving Brett Wilkinson moving to Munster and Donnacha Ryan, Darragh Hurley or Barry Murphy going west.

The Cheetahs front row was dominant with the Stormers the only team able to compete really. Funny how the Sharks front row who is the SA front row is our 3rd best and got owned by the Cheetahs. Think alot of it is help from good scrumming locks at the back and the partnership with WP Nel who is probably the better of the two. Smaller but technically superb. He should do fine.

There is always stil Coenie Oosthuizen for the Cheetahs if Wian leaves for good and who could blame him if consistent form throughout the tourney and destroying the SA frontrow doesn't earn you a call up. Good luck, Wian.

In the Sunday Times today, Tony McGahan is quoted as saying that they are trying to sign Du Preez on a three month deal but nothing has been finalized yet.
