Montpellier have just signed Argentine international winger, Lucas González Amorosino, on a two year deal from the Leicester Tigers. The club has already resigned French internationals Trinh-Duc and Oureadrogo, Georgian international Gordoze and the Argentine trio of Figallo, Fernández and Bustos Moyano. All of these players will be at the World Cup. Montpellier bought Bustos Moyano who is still uncapped and he has proven a really good buy. He is the goalkicker, is young and was bought dirt cheap. Certainly better than Stade Français buying Ollie Phillips and even Toulon buying Paul Sackey who was an expensive purchase. Montpellier go for youth and are methodical in their buying. I find it interesting seeing Brive struggle now after the club wasted so much money on poor aged English players like Shaun Perry, Jamie Noon and Ricky Flutey. None were good buys.

Montpellier, in contrast = really clever buying. Montpellier keep Oureadrogo, Toulouse keep Dusautoir. Montpellier keep a load of others too and Toulouse are keeping some and getting rid of others. i.e Albacete and Vergallo are staying. Kelleher and Skrela are leaving. Cleraly older players are being axed.

Leicester never used Amorosino well - no wonder he is leaving. What I find interesting is one of themost over rated players at the club and in the world, Geordan Murphy, was prefered. So, Leicester keep the veteran and lose the young talented player to France. Just the opposite of smart buying. Picamoles at Toulouse, well I always thought it was a bad move for him to leave Montpellier. At Toulouse is gets less game time and does not seem as impressive. Guy Noves plays Sowerby just as much. Consequently, he is out of the French side. His two former Montpellier team mates are still permanent members of the French squad.

BTW is it true that Bastareaud is leaving Stade Français to play for Toulon... To join the already massive 13´s at the club. He has had a bad season and last year was not flash either.

Not a bad signing
He was warming the bench/not getting selected at Tigers so makes sense to move on

Much as I share your opinion of Geordan Murphy being waaay overrated, you can't fault Leicester for wanting to keep a club legend above Amorosino, who hasn't set the world alight.

TBF I would have Murphy ahead of Amorosino any day of the week.

Is Tait joining Leicester as a winger instead of centre perhaps?

with tuilagi, hipkiss, twelvetrees & allen you'd think tait would be a mainly back 3 & potential cover for 13.

Murphy has one more year before retirement. But, you are right, the club keeping him is honorable but there is an argument supporting it. I agree with what Lucas González Amorosino himself had to say about it in an interview from a few hours ago:

"Leicester no es mi club para hoy" - Leicester is not my club for today.

"Me voy por un tema personal, un nuevo desafío. Ahí son todos jóvenes, es un proyecto nuevo y ser parte de algo así me gusta"

I am going for personal reasons, a new challenge. There (Montpellier) all the players are young, it is a new project and to be part of that is something I like.

He also said he is to play next weekend in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Murphy is a very good operator. He was electric before he broke his leg a good few legs back and is still a good man to have around the squad. I certainly want him in my WC squad somewhere.

Good signing for Montpellier. I always liked Amorosino.

The Smart Buying Continues

Now Montpellier have bought another Argentine international.

Agustín Creevy has also signed a two year deal. He is training with Los Pampas XV for the upcoming Vodacom Cup in South Africa and will join Montpellier after the World Cup. He was at Clermont this season before opting to return to Buenos Aires to get more game time with los Pampas. I rate him. He is more than 10 years younger than Mario Ledesma for starters... played as a backrower for Biarritz before being transfered to a hooker at the request of former Pumas coach Marcelo Loffreda. He may well be ahead of the eternal Pumas hooker, Super Mario at the World Cup itself.

Fabian Galthie arriving at the club after being Argentina´s assistant coach has seen the club be far more competitive and far more South American. Five Pumas there now. Before he arrived there was only one who is still there. Coincidence.... ;)

Remy Martin, Yoan Audryn and Jean Baptiste Peyras are also to join the club.

Really intelligent buying going on here. I would tip this side to make the Heineken Cup semi finals next season.

Unless you're Toulon, who have a lot of players with HC and international experience, it's not that easy for a new club to go far in the tournament.

£5 now says Montpellier won't be a HEC semi-finalist. Unless a French team wins this year, they may not even be in it.

Banking on players like Amorosino won't win them much either.

Simply this, Toulon took a while to gel together, maybe not next season but the season after!

As a Montpellierain, I can tell you we will NOT be in the HC semis next year. The objective will be (once again) the Top14. It is also going to depend on how we finish the current season.

About the signings, that's not too bad, except for Martin. The guy's a penalty machine, and old.
Apparently, we're targetting Thibault Privat, the Clermont enforcer. That would be a very good signing.

Sad about Kelleher. He's rumoured to be heading to Bayonne for next season. It'd be mean if he returned to play for the Chiefs, and maybe a RWC, but it's pretty unlikely considering he'll still be a part of the 2011 European Cup.
