They said the same about Mehrtens and Larkham.. Regardless he has the genes, his brother and dad are massive. Hes a pretty handy goal kicker; not amazing enough to base his selection on, but not bad enough to prevent it either.
I think Barrett's different and i'll tell you why:
When you look at the guys that have been touted in the past, they all have one thing in common; Fireworks. All these guys
(Kirkpatrick, Cruden, Anscombe, Renata etc) are seen obnoxiously wrecking defenses, you can watch them play schoolboy/age grade rugby and they stick out with the outrageous plays they pull off.
Barrett on the other hand has nothing flash about his game, no steps, no flick or kick passes. He just makes great decisions, plays high percentage rugby and takes a gap if he gets one. Theres something very Conrad Smith/Larkham about his play and linebreaking.
That kind of game just seems to translate to higher level rugby at an earlier age for me. Everyone else has to adjust to not being the best player on the field anymore, they dont know how to use the players around them as weapons as they have always been the number 1 option, they also have to completely remodel their game because half thei crazy-magic plays wont work in professional rugby. Barretts game doesn't have to change at all.
I still maintain that Cruden could be better one day if hes managed well, its just that Barrett looks like he could step up as early as next season. I dont beleive its a case of bandwagon jumping at all.
