That way, not only do you prove you were worth all the money, but you encourage others to bid even more when your contract is up. These guys only have a limited time to play rugby and get good money, so getting as much as you can before you have to retire is considered to be a good idea... Sorry, but I don't really see the reasoning there... He's a professional, and as a professional you always want to prove your worth where ever you go.
