Malaysia Rugby: Foreign legion to make comeback

AFTER being frozen out of Malaysian Rugby Union (MRU) tournaments last year, foreign players will make a comeback at the inaugural Guiness-MRU Super 10s at the Royal Selangor Club Sports Annexe, Bukit Kiara this weekend.

The tournament, which will feature 12 teams for the inaugural edition, allows competing clubs to enlist three foreign players for the event but can only field two at a time.

The event features elite clubs from each state in the country including Armed Forces and Police. However, clubs from Terengganu, Kelantan, Perlis and Sabah will not be competing as they were unable to prepare a team for the tournament due to player unavailability and financial constraint.

Tournament director Major Khalid Hamzah said the event was intended to complete the format of events the union has throughout the year in addition to providing a platform for imports to compete in.

"MRU already has the National Sevens and the Agong's Cup which is a 15s tournament so we decided to add a 10s tournament for variety," said Khalid.

"Local clubs have employed a number of foreign players to aid in local player development and since we disallowed the use of imports in the Agong's Cup and National Sevens last year, they have not had a chance to play competitively."

Khalid said that compared to the rugby sevens format, the inclusion of two foreign players does not hinder local players chances of competing and excelling in the tournament.

"Two players out of ten really does not make much of a difference as the other eight local players still need to be of good quality for a team to be able to do well.

"The inclusion of foreign players also serves as a first point of contact for local players to get used to coming up against physically bigger opponents who they will have to face in international tournaments," added Khalid.

Teams competing -- Group A: Cobra (Sel), Police Bersatu (Royal Malaysian Police), Sahoca (Ked), Keris Conlay (Sel).

Group B: NS Wanderers, Scorpion Rugby Club (Putrajaya), Puo Panthers (Prk), Bandaraya Dragon (KL).

Group C: ATM A (Malaysian Armed Forces), Kuching Polytechnic (Swk), Johor Panthers,RMP Pahang (Pahang).
