London Irish have announced the signing of Wales Under-20s fly-half Steven Shingler from Scarlets.

The 19-year-old, who has made four appearances for the Welsh regional outfit, has signed a two-year deal.

"I'm impressed with [head coach] Toby Booth's vision and the opportunity of learning from Mike Catt is too good to turn down," Shingler said.

"Steven is a player with a huge amount of potential and he will be a great attribute for our squad," Booth added.

"He has impressive vision and is a superb goal kicker. We feel working with the coaching team here at London Irish will help to propel Steven to the next level of his game."

Just read this on bbc sport, prior to seeing the thread. Good to hear he's doing well, and definitely didn't see this coming a few years ago (when we played on the same team). Wales need to try and develop their youngsters and tbh the Magners may not be the best place to do it (French league did wonders for Steven Jones). Good Luck to him, only time will tell i guess :D

Explain where the likes of Hook, Roberts, John Davies, Halfpenny have seemingly come from?

Stephen Jones was a decent player back in the Welsh Prem days, only really fully developed when he went to France.

yer i know what u mean. didn't think through my latter half of the post. I'm not doubting the Magners' quality (well i kinda am - I don't have a problem with it :p :p) but for some reason we as the general rugby public don't "trust" any of the fly halves further down in the pecking order to take over from SJ. I guess that some of our players have benefitted greatly by being in a different playing environment, so i guess theres no harm in going away to "learn the trade" and then coming back - Which i can see him doing in the future. If he'd stayed with the Scarlets he'd be way down in the pecking order of fly halves (i'd presume with Jones and Priestland among others). I guess he's been advised to go away and develop and at some point (if he nurtures in the right way), he'll try and come back to earn a welsh place.
Anyways, Good luck to him and see how things go.

Another youngster for Booth to embrace then rape, ruin then toss into the gutter.

No doubt Captain Hook's a fine player but far from being all he could be.

Appears that the Scarlets see Newton as their third choice flyhalf behind Stephen Jone and Priestland. Newton's had some good games recently from fullback, but has slotted in at 10 very well in those games.

Bit of a pity though, as I'd heard some good things about Shingler. If he develops at LI, then it's all good though.
