Newport Gwent Dragons and Wales hooker Lloyd Burns has been forced to retire from rugby, following a neck injury that has seen the hooker out of action since the beginning of January.

Ongoing tests have revealed damage to the aorta resulting in immediate retirement, with possible heart surgery to follow.

Sad to hear that. Hope all goes well for him in the future

Really sad, only 27. I am sure the rugby community will pull together and help him through his very premature retirement. That's just what we do.

Gutted for the bloke.
From Welsh Prem to World Cup in just over a year. Wasn't flashy or outstanding, but performed when called up.
Greater determination than many in the squad.

Got to feel sad for the bloke. Only just made it at pro level, and barely a year later has to retire due to injury. At least he achieved what he did though, and he'll never forget the experience of going to a world cup with Wales, and being an integral part of the squad. Hope for all the best in the future.

WELSH RUGBY UNION STATEMENT
The Welsh Rugby Union wants to thank the Newport Gwent Dragons and seven-times-capped Wales hooker, Lloyd Burns, for his massive contribution to rugby union during his sadly curtailed playing career.
He earned recognition for his prowess as a Cross Keys player in the Principality Premiership before being recruited by the Newport Gwent Dragons and earning selection for Wales.
The hooker has been forced to retire from rugby, following a neck injury which has kept him out of the game since January.
WRU Head of Rugby, Joe Lydon, said: “All of us involved in Welsh rugby want to pass on our best wishes for the future to Lloyd after his sadly enforced retirement from the sport.
“We can only imagine his disappointment especially given the incredible recognition he has earned at the top level of the sport in Wales over the past year in particular.
“Of course the most important issue for Lloyd is his continued good health, but he can look back on a playing career in which he truly proved his potential.

“Apart from winning his caps, one important legacy he can be proud of is how he proved to us all that the standard of rugby being played in the Principality Premiership here in Wales can equip players to achieve their potential at the highest level.â€

Big shame, having to go that early with that much talent - when it clearly meant so much to him :( Hope the rest of his life is great.

I really hate it when you see a player retire due to an injury especially someone with a minimum of 8 years left as a player.
