Anybody able to help me out, trying to remember a kiwi second row from around 2006/07, James Ryan. Ginger lad, had a few AB caps and was tipped to replace Chris Jack I think. Know he had a few injuries, whatever happened? Google only said he took a break in 2008, what is he up to now? Always played a solid game for me in Rugby 08 (along with the legend of Ben Atiga!).

He had a back or neck injury which meant he couldn't play for a decent period of time, he was assisting the commentary team at the 07 world cup, I think. He then decided to take a break, possibly to study, and he basically just decided that he wasn't as big a fan of playing rugby as he initially thought he was.

Basically he had 2-3 reasonably serious injuries in a row (the last was a knee reconstruction if I recall correctly) so decided rugby wasn't worth it. He had already finished his his law degree at this stage, so decided that starting his career as a lawyer sooner rather than later was his best option. Last I heard (a few years ago) he was working as a lawyer in Dunedin.

Him and Jason Eaton, so much wasted potential due to injury... would've been handy to have had Eaton especially as part of the rotation with Retallick and Whitelock.

did you know he use to play for edinburgh ?

Yep, I did a bit of research on him in an article I was working on a few months ago, unfortunately, the files was overwritten and I can't be bothered to rewrite it now.

Eaton was another of my R08 favourites. Was rumoured to be headed to Llanelli a few years back.

he was a bloody good player. I asked the same questions a few years ago and after some digging found he basically quit rugby after some injuries took him out for long periods. It also seemed that he was not that keen on being in the public eye so much as an All Black.

Yea i remember him.. I picked him to be a future star. Always performed when fit.

But yea after those injuries he seemed to be forever on the medical bay.

He was a great player. Could have been a real star.
