For those who want to know how Super Rugby will work this year here's a video to explain it all for those of you who are still confused!

I was watching the Super Rugby Extra time show and got me wondering.
Bar the divisional winners, will all the wildcard entrants be exclusively the 2nd placed teams in each division? Because we could have a situation where one division can be relatively poor for one season and its champion end up at a spot below 3rd. This would mean the strongest division could potentially have 3 teams instead of 2.

I think teams that have the advantage are strong teams with weak teams in their conference much like the teams pooled with and Italian side in the HC gets free 5 points and invariably end up among the top qualifiers. Aus and SA have the advantage here as
our weaker teams (Rebels, Force, Lions and Cheetahs) should be wins for the stronger teams even though they may push it close in derbie matches (Sharks, Bulls, Waratahs and Reds beating these previously mentioned teams). Compare that to the NZ conference where the 'weaker' teams are the Highlandrs and Chiefs where the Highlanders ended up beating the Hurricanes who will struggle to qualify with 2 matches against the Blues and Crusaders and the other top teams in other conferences having 'an easier ride'.

Something which had me confused but I think it is a great innovation is that teams get 4 points for a bye.

It sounds weird at first but I feel it gets rid of anyone needing to keep in mind that some teams have had less games and one could only have a look at the log. Then again for teams struggling to win, they are probably looking forward to the free 8 points LOL and this is another way the log could not be a very good reflection of form. Oh well.

No, it is the top team from each division and then the next 3 best teams overall. It is essentially just the top six teams as I'm pretty sure in the history of Super Rugby each country has always had a team in the top six.

It does disadvantage us but I'm not too worried about that. The best teams will win through in the end. It is the price to pay for a longer season which can compete with the other Australian football codes and more local derbies.

It also puts Southern Hemisphere rugby in a better position money-wise in relation to the North; hopefully with somewhat bigger salaries less of our players will be lured up North and with the need for greater depth we will see our youngsters get more chances at top flight rugby- well either that or exhausted senior players and both are likely.

My only gripe is the loss in relevance of the CC and NZ provinvial championships. But I expect both will weather the storm as both are so ingrained in the rugby culture of our nations and you can't have your bread buttered both sides (although I sometimes do - I love butter).

Well, yes. Both the Currie Cup and the NPC will still have their places. Those competitions are vital as a stepping stone for younger players. It is also important that the provinces or smaller towns have a chance to see top quality rugby as well. Many places would miss out on rugby all together without the NPC and CC. Those competitions will always be there.

We'll see how it pans out but i have a suspect feeling that with the strength of the NZ and SA division Australia could only potentially have 1 team in the top6/finals. Unless the rebels keep giving away bonus points for the 4+ tries.

Only seen it mentioned stormer2010's post, but I think the 4 points for a bye is rather pointless (pardon the pun)

It means that those logs which dinnae show a BP column will have people unaware scratching their heads

I seriously don't see why this is done, is it meant to make it look more competitive (as in the bottom teams would at least have 8 points)

With the Reds winning the cup, does this mean next season they versus 4 higher ranked teams (of this season) or is it completely random?

Next season the Reds will play the same 4 Australian teams ( NSW Waratahs, Melbourne Rebels, Western Force, and ACT Brumbies) twice in a home and away format like this year, and each other team once during round robin play ... they didn't play all of the teams this year because of the world cup shortening the season.

Remove this sticky...
Format does not work to be honest ;)
