Hello everyone.

Now where to begin. My name is Mark and I am 21. I come from Huddersfield and in my spare time I enjoy watching Huddersfield Town and Yorkshire County Cricket Club as I am a season ticket holder for Football and a have a Yorkshire membership. I also like playing computer games, probably a bit too much.

I'm actually a big lover of sports and sports certainly take up most of my spare time, especially watching it on TV and I can watch a wide range from Football to the much slower sport of Baseball, and for all of the sports that I watch I have at least one Team I follow. For one reason or another though Rugby has always been one of those games that I struggle to get into, be it Union or League.

I used to watch the WC final and a couple of games from the 6 Nations but I was never really that interested in watching it. However before the 6 Nations started this year, I thought I'd give it another go, to see if I can finally get into the sport and it has probably been one of the best decisions I have done. I have watched as many games as I've been able to and all of the games I have seen I have enjoyed.

Now this brings me to my chosen teams, domestically and internationally, seen as I have decided to follow Rugby, I thought I might as well choose a Team and Nation to support. My International team I have gone for is Ireland and I picked up my first ever Ireland Rugby shirt last week. Now this may be a bit of a strange call once you get to know me but let me explain the reason behind this. I was actually born in England and I have only ever stepped foot in Ireland or even Northern Ireland for that matter, once before, and that was at the beginning of this month for Northern Ireland V Scotland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin as I support Northern Ireland in Football. The reason as to why I support Northern Ireland (Football) and Ireland (Rugby) is because my Grandma was from Belfast and my dad is half Northern Irish so it was passed down from there. Plus I've never been a big lover of England in Football so always enjoyed watching Northern Ireland on TV.

As for domestic I don't really have a team just yet, as I have never been to a Union game before, but I have actually decided that I will attend my first ever Union game next week when I watch my local club Huddersfield in the National League 2 North next Saturday. So I would probably say that I'll chose Huddersfield as my Union team, even though they are only Armature but I am certainly looking forward to attending my first game.

In deciding to follow Rugby I wanted to find a forum where I could learn more about the game and have a good laugh with fellow fans so I did a quick google search for 'Rugby Union forum' and this is where I ended up.

I don't know much about positions or anything like that but hopefully I will soon pick that up.

Sorry for rambling on and if you would like to know anymore then please feel free to ask.

Mark

Welcome to the forum!
Stockport is only 30 short miles away from Huddersfield, so you should support Sale Sharks, like all the cool kids do ( :p )

You'll pick up a lot of the positions and rules etc. from watching matches, and with the 6 nations atm and then World Cup in a few months there'll be plenty on

welcome lad! prerp for a bitta punishment supporting ireland in the next couple of months.

Also, i believe you should support Ulster. A good young team based in Belfast.

Them or Munster;)

I've found a helpful way of trying to learn the rules of any sport, is to pick up a cheap PC game, especially when you're learning fairly late. For that reason, if you can grab a hold of EA Rugby 06 or Rugby 08 or either of the two upcoming rugby game series, it will go a long way to learning about positions. With that in mind, feel free to ask questions if you have any, and there will no doubt be a handful of people who will post all you need to know.

Interesting that you have gotten more into Rugby Union over the last wee while, as the game has no doubt become more exciting with more tries, especially in the Northern Hemisphere where tries were some what of a luxury rather than a necessity to enjoy a game. I'm sure rugby will continue to give you enjoyment, especially in a World Cup year.

Finally, post when you have something interesting. We have a very large number of members in this forum, but there are a lot more passive members, who just read and enjoy, which is fine, but a wide range of opinions (serious or otherwise) are always welcomed. With that in mind, welcome to The Rugby Forum and I'm sure I'll read more great posts in the future.

Thank's everyone. I must admit my first impressions of the website are really good and certainly loks like somewhere I will want to stick around.

I had actually thought about going over to watch Sale Sharks, not so much support them but try and get in a Premiership game as they are the closest Premiership club to me and Leeds doesn't even come into the equation.

I hadn't really considered picking an Irish Team to follow as I live over here but I do read up on the games from Ulster. I will probably pick an Irish team that I will start to follow but I'll have to see which one takes my fancy.

Cheers mate, the suprising this actually is that I already own Rugby 08 and Rugby Challenge 2006 on the PC which I have had for a good few years now, and I thoroughly enjoy playing both games. I also have Pro Rugby Manager 2 and this week downloaded the free Rugby Union Manager but because I don't know anything regarding stats etc I struggle.

Yeah I do think that has been one of the main reasons as to why I am starting to enjoy watching games, as I used to get bored watching the kick and rush where as these day's the games that I have seen have been all about running.

I certainly plan on sticking around and being an active member as the other way to learn more about the game is to talk with other people and also see what they have to say. I'll look forward to getting around and discussing various subjects with everyone.

Mark, given your heritage, it just has to be Ulster. Besides, Ulster are brill anyway. They just are.

Welcome to the forum.
