Gladiators

Trust sky to shamelessly rip off something good from the 90s, but after watching a few episodes its not that bad.

Anyway not so much the point, did anyone see that Rugby player on today, England under 19's bloke. Did the Gauntlet in 8 seconds, f***ing sick, and won on Duel. If we take Gladitors as a kind of Leveler of sport (at least contact sports) then I think it prooves rugby is the best all round sport.

That Spartan gladiator was the Britain American Football team Captain and lost to this u19's bloke on duel, even if it was on a pretty dodgy ref's decision.

I've enjoyed watching the Australian version of Gladiator. (Mainly because of one of the hosts, Zoe Naylor).

I still remember watching the original Australian version back in the mid Nineties...my first real television show love.

I really want to see the new installment of American Gladiators though because Hulk Hogan is one of the hosts!!!!

Yeah the Original UK show ran from 92-2000. It was unreal, the new one is a shadow of that.

I often wondered, like with UK basketball to a certain extent, is the entire American Football team actually Americans with UK passports?

And to be fair, any brit that plays American Football can't be that good surely?!

I would love to see on gladiators in any country some Islanders have a go. Did you know something statswise from American Samoa that they have something like 8 pros in the NFL out of a population of around 70,000? That is unprecedented.

I would pay to watch Finau Maka or Jonah in his prime run the gauntlet.. there'd be dead bodies everywhere!

/ ambulance for Wolf

Not wold anymore I'm afraid, but this guy, I missed him telling his position but judging by his build possibly a flanker or big center, he just floored them. And don't get me wrong these Gladiators are fitness guru's who spend all day in the Gym, they are tough big people. But they were no match.

Its funny because the new bad guy is a bloke called oblvion and he was ******* himself just before the Gauntlet, I'll try get a highlight for you.

I have only watched some clips of the new version of Gladiators. Don't really like it because they have given two Gladiators the names "Spartan" and "Atlas" The Spartans were true warriors who would not have blown up safety nets and water to ease their fall. Also Atlas was the ***an, who after the ***anomachy, was punished by Zeus by being made to hold up the sky. The names seem a bit tacty, why can they not have normal names and not use the names of legends who should not be remember in a re-made tv show.

Nice try mate, but Atlas had to hold up the Earth not the sky, until he was turned to stone by Perseus using the head of Medusa. His brother Prometheus was bound to a rock, until he was freed by Heracles. <- Leaving cert classics = my best subject.

Saftey nets are gone now mate, it's all swimming pools now.

I think the main problem is between the Original Uk series which had 32 glads (or so) and the original and new american series and the original aus series most names were taken.

I personally have no problem with them infringing a bit on mythology, after all a zoologist might be annoyed at their interpretation of wolf or panther.

Link to highlight it about 6 and half minutes in, I need to learn to embed...

Atlas, along with his brother Menoetius, sided with the ***ans in their war against the Olympians, the ***anomachy. His brothers Prometheus and Epimetheus weighed the odds and betrayed the other ***ans by forming an alliance with the Olympians. When the ***ans were defeated , many of them (including Menoetius) were confined to Tartarus, but Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the western edge of the Gaia, the Earth and hold up Ouranos, the Sky on his shoulders, to prevent the two from resuming their primordial embrace. Thus he was Atlas Telamon, "enduring Atlas".

A common misconception is that Atlas was forced to hold the Earth on his shoulders, but this is incorrect. Classical art shows Atlas holding a Celestial Sphere, not a Globe.

Classical studies obviously not my best subject.... :p

However I do think if I was to quote "prometheus bound" that it was said by the chorus of Sea Nymphs that he did have to hold up the earth.

In actual fact, I assume they are translation errors and misconceptions.

You got that paragraph from Wikipedia. It is such a fantastic site for research and knowledge.

I remember the old one. Used to watch it all the time. Not got chance to see the new one yet.
