I personally don't agree what he says there, for a start the RWC was 18 months ago, I get the feeling its a far stronger set up within the England set up. Apart from Care, I can'r recall many or any instances of English players getting in trouble with the law. To limit inclusion of English players if they arent good enough I think we can all support but to ignore them based on a, frankly out of date and tabloid driven, preconception is wrong.
Gatland has said that having too many English players in the Lion squad would create 'pressures' on the tour.
In an interview in the Evening Standard Gatland cited a history of unpopularity surrounding the English rugby squad as part of the reasoning for his decision.
Gatland also said that the media circus which surrounded the England side during the 2011 World Cup influenced his desire to limit the number of English players in the Lions Squad.
He said: "If they do well in the Six Nations, there will be a reasonable contingent of English players. But that brings a certain element of â€" how do I say it â€" other pressures that come with selecting a lot of English players.
"It becomes a much greater media focus from the English papers; potentially a negative focus from the Australian papers. And English players are targeted by other countries.
Robshaw exclusive: Dublin could be our watershed 11 Feb 2013
"[They are] not always the most popular with other countries because of the history. People like having a pop at them.â€
While Gatland emphasised that he would select the best players for his Lions squad, he said he had to be aware that potential issues could arise:
"We all know what happened with England at the World Cup and the circus that was created.
"I’ve just got to be aware of the possibilities that, if there are a number of English players on the tour, the same sort of things could be instigated, through stings through the media or set-ups trying to create controversy.â€
Martin Johnson's side generated scathing headlines for their actions on and off the pitch during the tournament, Wales coached by Gatland, made it to the semi-finals.
Gatland said that while he doesn't run a 'dictatorship', it is essential that his players understand the importance of boundaries:
"These are young men filled up with a lot of testosterone and sometimes they need to go out and just unwind. But it’s essential these players know what their boundaries are.
"The way I work, it’s not a dictatorship, it’s a consultation with the other coaches and senior players or the captain.
"You might say to players, ‘Go out for a couple of hours and have a beer and maybe you’re back in the hotel by one o’clock’, particularly with night games."
