Cape Town - SANZAR head of referees Lyndon Bray confirmed on Wednesday that New Zealand referee Bryce Lawrence’s Test career is over, according to EWN Sport.

Lawrence, who was unbelievably named New Zealand’s referee of the year in 2011, has been in freefall since taking charge of the Rugby World Cup quarter-final between the Springboks and Wallabies, a game where he allowed the Wallabies the freedom of the park as they won despite having little possession.
Lawrence was widely criticised for his handling of the game, which bundled the Springboks out of the World Cup and was subsequently not given any Six Nations games at the beginning of 2012, with Sanzar refereeing boss Lyndon Bray admitting he needed to be “rehabilitated†following the performance.

ive hated Lawrence since he ref'd last years super rugby final. Glen Jackson is hands down the best ref in NZ.

I thought he was **** when he reffed SA vs Australia, but so were SA. SA had so many opportunities and so much possession and did not score. They should have won by 15 - 20 points even with a **** ref. I'm quite happy to have a go at the ref and blame him for us losing, but not when we have played shithouse. I thought the ref (can't remember his name) who reffed the Aus - Ire game was dreadful, but we were crap & Ireland outplayed us, so you don't complain about the ref. Perhaps a dubious try gets awarded in the final minute or something have a go at the ref, but seriously when SA were gifted so much ball and failed to score, they have to stick their hand up and say yeah the ref was ****, but so were we.

I quite like Steve Walsh although he does seem a bit unprofessional off the pitch. Joubert is pretty good and some English bloke with silver hair.

I think Joubert ****** the French off during the final of the RWC last year. Not so much for doing something as for not doing much in terms of officiating; you could argue the merits of the letting-the-players-sort-themselves-out approach versus a much more technical and whistle-happy approach but I think Joubert didn't whistle the final as he did the games beforehand and I'd understand a French grudge against him (in light Lawrence refusing to penalize the Aussies in our 1/4 final loss against them and how ****** I was at his 'performance' with the whistle in that game). Rather ironic as well with Joubert having a French surname LOL. That said I think he is a good ref and maybe the final was just too big a game too early in his carreer.

ZED, I also think Walsh has had a good year so far in the S15/SR. Never thought I'd say it but he's been good.

I thought he was terrible and very biased against Englad a few years back BUT have been singing his praises over the last year or so as I believe he is now one of the best!

Lawrence has been diabolical in every game he has refed since the WC, not that he has been good before then. He shouldn't reff another Super rugby game as far as i'm concerned he isn't up to the standard required. He could probably do a job in the Pro12 though, the refs there are amongst the worst in professional rugby.

(But that can also be a reflection on the player's attitudes as well).

typical SA... they only worry or complain when their team gets disadvantaged...

the AB were robbed in 2007, i still didn't hear 1 SA supporter complain... its about right and wrong... whether you affacted or not...

Do you not consider yourself South African? You can support whomever you want but being born and living in SA don't you consider yourself as part of SA?

Lawrence had a terrible performance and your deluding yourself if you say otherwise. So to did Barnes in 2007 though of course I'd say Lawrence's performance was worse. Browse around and you'll find plenty of posts where I said so previously and also where I sympathise with France as I feel Joubert had a bad game in the final of 2011 RWC. That's just me but that is allready 1 Saffa. As for karma and 2007, well yeah, we all know SA didn't deserve to win as surely the All Blacks would have strolled through the tournament like they do at every other RWC... oh, wait no, they have only managed to win on home soil (without SA even in the first one).

Lawrence has been a average/crap reff all his career, after the world cup he has been on a massive downward spiral.

Barnes on the other hand been a average/good ref most of his career and he has had the ******** to work through the criticism he received and improved as a referee.
