Breaking news. After securing the multi million dollars in US currency sponsor Fiji Rugby Union have now:

* Given full time contract to its sevens players.

* Will be paying each players on the EOYT 20,000 dollars.

* Have invested in a business plan to start a pro league.

* Have concentrated efforts to start a scrum academy from school age to seniors.

I am absolutely chuffed. The view of the FRU is if we can be tier 1 in sevens then we can as well in 15s and they've identified that our scrums need to be upgraded hence the scrum academy. Also during international they're working out a solution to make sure the players don't loose out financially by paying them as well as maybe giving money to their clubs in the hope of nit only securing player release but also early release to enable proper preparation before every test.

that's really cool for Fiji. About time they reaped benefits from producing such talented athletes, and such a prolific number and at such a rate. Everybody's benefited from Fijian players but Fiji. It's pretty fkd. I like the last two points particularly.

Fiji have the potential to become top 4 in the world easy. If they have the coaching and infrastructure that they look to be implementing.

The sponsorship is about 24 million a year.

24 million a year is too much for a country with less than 1 million inhabitants. Are you sure about that number? We're talking about American dollars? A few years ago I read that Adidas was paying NZRU something like 20 million American dollars.

Easy??? I'm not sure, they need improve their set-piece. It's one of the hardest parts of the game, look at Australia and their problems with the front row

Is there a link to an article about this?

haha, Leetol Goy the skeptical ! It's true really, FlyingEndorphin could have led us into a trap, a thread trap !! And like cattle we've walked right in, and started eating the green green grass everywhere. This could all be a thrap.

Just wanted to double check all the details, 24 million US a year does seem high as Conrad suggested. Not a number that's completely impossible I suppose but really on the upper edges of plausible.

Edit: I did some digging and can't find anything whatsoever on this from any rugby or Fijian general news sources. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places so if someone can find something I'd appreciate it.

I thought the same and had a search earlier - couldn't find anything.

I havn't found anything yet.

Nothing on there twitter and considering they have Leicester tigers news there I would have thought it would be there.

I smell something fishy and it isn't my socks.

'Flyingdolphins' has really only just been posting Fijian hubris here. I wouldn't consider him a trustworthy source.

I found similar information:

A consortium of six local companies led by Vodafone Fiji is the new sponsor of Fiji Rugby

The consortium has signed on as sponsors of the Fiji Rugby Union and all its property for a record sum of $40 million - $8m annually for the next five years

http://fijisun.com.fj/2014/02/06/vodafone-led-group-sponsors-fiji-rugby/

The link speaks of 8 million per year, still a high figure for such a tiny country but I can't find other sources of information.

:wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko::wacko:

That's from February, and while good news is hardly the breaking news that's being claimed here, nor anywhere near the 24 million a year mark.
