Mate, I cant speak for everyone, but for me I dont think it matters where NZ crash out. Obviously they have never crashed out in the group phase, and I dont think that will ever happen to be honest, but crashing out in the SF in '99, again in '03, then the QF in '07 I suspect hurt AB fans almost as much as it may have if we'd simply crashed out in the group phase. The simple fact is the ABs and AB supporters go into each and every world cup to win it, and anything short of at least making the final is a disaster, and making the final but losing is only slightly better! As for getting over it?? I'm not sure the masses will ever truly get over those shock exits! No matter what happens in the future the pain of those games was real, the shock was real, and that will never change. I guess the only difference between getting knocked out in the finals vs in the group phase is the embarrassment factor! I dont feel like as an ABs supporter I've ever felt embarrassed by our team, just bitterly disappointed at times! It has been said that in NZ rugby would die if certain games werent won - i.e. the '11 RWC final. But to be honest it's deeply ingrained in us so I highly doubt that would ever happen. But we can be ******s in NZ even at the best of times when it comes to rugby, so there would be all sorts of demands for heads to roll, and players and coaches legacies would be shattered in terms of public opinion. Hence winning the RWC in '11 was so important IMO. So many guys in that AB team had ahd such wonderful careers, but for example if we hadnt won that RWC, McCaws legacy would have been very different. I'm not sure we would be seeing him in the final this weekend for example. Which is a shame, cause one game can always go either way! There's quite a lot of luck involved I reckon!! Anyway I've gone on a bit longer than I intended, but perhaps I've provided a bit of insight into some Kiwis way of thinking!
