Hello, and welcome to this year's TRF coverage of E3 2009.

While E3 officially starts tommorrow (2nd-4th June), the big draw every year is the fact that the big three console manufacturers have big conferences, where they usually pull out their big guns for the remainder of the year.

Here's when they're taking place, and any current big rumours. Coverage of the event shall be provided by me (courtesy of my personal blog Project Ch@os).
  • Microsoft
    Monday 1st June, 6.25pm BST

Originally set for a half 6 start, they've decided to push it 5 minutes earlier to accomodate "a very special addition". One could argue that Microsoft was the only company out of the big three to take last year's E3 seriously, and if nothing else it sounds like Microsoft are putting the same heart into it this year. Big rumours suggest motion-control will be unveiled. Safe bets include Halo 3: The Expansion Pack and Lionhead's next project (Fable or otherwise). Outside takers include Crackdown 2.
  • Nintendo
    Tuesday 2nd June, 5pm BST

One could argue that Nintendo have a lot to make up for this year, after last year was essentially "We make a f***ton of money, here's some casual games you dont give a **** about. Oh, and Animal Crossing. The hardcore loves Animal Crossing, right?" Big rumours suggest another new Zelda game and maybe even a new Mario ***le. Safe bets include the sequel to Wii Fit. Outside takers include some brand new IP that takes the hardcore seriously.
  • Sony
    Tuesday 2nd June, 7pm BST

They've probably had some of their momentum taken out of them by their accidental unveiling of the new PSP model, PSP Go, over the weekend, but with Sony last year being more talk than announcing anything spectacular, eye's are on them to show their relavancy in the face of going from front-runner to has-been. Big rumours suggest a new "slimline" PS3 model. Safe bets include God of War 3 and the new PSP Metal Gear Solid ***le. Outside takers include them not waffling on about how the PS1 and PS2 were so great so the PS3 must also be awesome.
By all means feel free to post your thoughts and predictions below. Everyone is invited to participate in the speculation and ranting.

New Zelda/any Nintendo first-party and Project Trico news! *fingers crossed*

Despite the fact that E3 has yet to officially start, many companies have been releasing teasers and promotions for their games in anticipation for this event. Indeed, this year may be known as the year where the foreplay was more exciting than the main event. Here's some of the things that were announced today that caught my eye.
  • Kojima Productions are up to their usual wily antics, having put up a teaser website with a timer, which when ran out unveiled another timer, this time with a picture of what looked to be Metal Gear Solid's Big Boss. Well, that timer has now expired and another timer has unveiled itself. Quelle surprise. At least this time, the pictures dont appear to be related to Metal Gear at all, once again throwing people in a loop, like Kojima only knows how. The timer runs out at 11pm BST, a few hours after Microsoft's big conference, which some mentalists and trying to put together in grand conspiracy manner. Personally speaking, wouldnt the timer running out during Microsoft's conference be more likely in that scenario? I would suggest that its the accidentally already unveiled latest PSP iteration (to go with the PSP Go), but it has to be said, this grand unveiling is probably a bit spectacular for a sodding PSP game. Take a look, if you really must.
  • Were you looking forward to DJ Hero? Activision has announced that Eminem and Jay-Z are now attached to the project. Still looking forward to it?

  • In addition to that, Activision have unveiled the band list for Guitar Hero 5. The surprise addition of Gorillaz amongst others suggests a more pop-based slant to proceedings this year, but feel free to look at the entire list.
  • In addition to the already known about Halo 3 expansion (no, I refuse to call it by its name), rumours are currently swirling around that Bungie are also attached to another Halo project, simply called Halo: Reach. After last years shambles where they were meant to announce their projects at E3, but were pulled at the very last minute, I suspect Bungie are going to try and make a spectacle to compensate this year.

  • Lego Indiana Jones 2. God, how predictable. Bits from the first three films, plus the introduction of content from the fourth. The big gimmick this time is user-generated content, with an in-built level editor and character creator. And some new moves for Indy's whip. Yeah, even LucasArts cant get excited about them anymore.

  • Batman: Arkham Asylum is now due 28th August in Europe. I put this down here because I know a few of you are interested in this.

  • Battlefield 1943 (due this month) was originally intended to ship with only three maps. It will now ship with four. The catch? In order to unlock the fourth, 43 million kills have to be registered on the servers. Not that they're making a gimmick out of a tragic war or anything...

Christ... Looks like Guitar Hero 5 will be a crappy play list (hardly as if there will be any Gameplay advances). Think I'll stick with World Tour/Metallica and just buy the DLC songs that take my interest.

Couple more interesting tidbits.
  • In addition to Lego Indiana Jones 2, it's also been confirmed today that Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is also in production, based on the first four books/movies. Next you'll be telling me they're going to be making a Lego version of some sort of rock band-esque rhythm game...

  • EA have announced some release dates, most interesting of which is a January 2010 release for Mass Effect 2. Also confirmed is Crysis 2, this time available on 360 and PS3 in addition to PC.

  • Epic Games have "something new to announce" at E3. This is literally all I have to tell you on this front at this current moment.
  • Japanese news service Nikkei have stated that a new Wii Mario ***le should be out in Japan at some point this year. As they didnt explicitly state it was a core Mario game, I will go on record and say its probably a Mario Party ***le. Maybe i'll be proven wrong tommorrow. Maybe it's Mario Golf for the Wii.

  • LucasArts, in what can only be the most sensible thing they've announced since Knights of the Old Republic, has confirmed that they're bringing back the Monkey Island franchise. Unfortunately, this solely consists of a Special Edition of The Secret of Monkey Island (controvertially with updated graphics and voice-overs, with a remastered soundtrack) available on the PC and Xbox 360, and a series of episodic ***les made by Telltale Games for PC and WiiWare. Fortunately Telltale do have a decent reputation and are composed by a lot of ex-Lucasarts staffers, so it's hard not to see this as ultimately being a step in the right direction. Especially when some bigwig at Lucasarts says "These efforts are just the start of LucasArts' new mission to revitalize [sic] its deep portfolio of beloved gaming franchises." I want you all to cross your fingers and hope for a XBLA version of X-Wing vs TIE Fighter.
  • Not neccessarily E3 related, but its timing certainly co-incides with the event. The ESRB, the American ratings board, has recently listed an entry for Final Fantasy VII on PS3 and PSP. It looks like the PSOne original may finally become available via the Playstation Store in the near future...
Right, Microsoft conference in 20 minutes. I suppose I had best go prepare...

Microsoft E3 Media Briefing Highlights

[In an attempt to try something new, I updated this post as stuff was announced, ala a liveblog. Please feel free to comment on the writing style and whether or not you'd prefer the old style back.]
  • Rock Band: The Beatles had the first 10 of its 45 tracks unveiled today (song list here). In addition, there will be entire Beatles albums as downloadable content ("Abbey Road" cited as the first), and a special version of "All You Need Is Love" will be available exclusively via Xbox Live Marketplace, the proceeds of that song going to the Doctors without Borders charity. Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Olivia Harrison all turned up in-person too. Presumably to tell fans not to contact them (peace and love).
  • "Ten world premieres of games that have never been seen before" - I hope we're all counting along at home. Most of the trailers shown during the event will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace today, should you feel so inclined.
  • Tony Hawk has shown up with the final design of the skateboard peripheral you'll need to play Tony Hawk Ride. It has accelerometers. If I tried it, I would probably fall over because I have no sense of balance.

  • Two Modern Warfare 2 map packs will be released on timed exclusivity on Xbox Live.

  • Square Enix have announced that Final Fantasy XIII is now running on Xbox 360. So much for waiting till they've completed it before porting it like they said last year. Still, as a result, Spring 2010 is now their target for Western release (or, at least American).

  • Here we go. Exclusive #1 - Epic Games has an Xbox Live Arcade coming out! It's called Shadow Complex, is a 2D action game and is being made by the same team who made Undertow. Oh.

  • Exclusive #2 - Joyride. By Big Park Games. Racing game, obviously. It appears to use Avatars, which do seem to have been quite underused in games. It'll be "free to download, free to play". Any racetrack you purchase can be shared amongst your friends, regardless of whether they purchased it or not. You can personalise your experience by buying cars, upgrades and more. Coming this Winter.
  • Exclusive #3 - CRACKDOWN 2 MOTHER[LOVER]S. Yeah, time to show Prototype and inFamous how it's done. Just a trailer on display though, mind.

  • Exclusive #4 - Left 4 Dead 2. Uh, wat. I'll assume this one gets a PC release too. It *is* Valve. (Update: Valve just released a press release. Yes, it is out on PC too. Both due 17th November.)

  • Exclusive #5 - Splinter Cell: Conviction. Looks, unsurprisingly, like its changed quite a bit since its last showing so many years ago. And unless Assassin's Creed 2 involves Sam Fisher in Washington getting hooked up to a machine to reveal his ancestor is a renaissance-period assassin, I suspect Dan's theory is somewhat wrong...

  • Exclusive #6 - Forza Motorsport 3. Yeah, I know, you're just simply shocked... Over 400 cars, runs at 60fps (actually surprisingly rare this generation), has a rewind feature ala Prince of Persia and GRID, player-created content, the ability to create and upload hi-def vids (of the cars, obv). Out October 27th in the US.

  • Exclusive #7 - Halo 3: *deep breath and sigh of resignation* ODST. Two sound-suppressed weapons have been unveiled (yay!) and a low-light vision mode called VISR. New Mombasa of Halo 2 fame cast in the shadow of night. The ODST pistol also looks like its more like the original Halo pistol (yay!). And a flashback to the "Oni Alpha Site", set two hours earlier. Speculate away! Also, something about a Firefight mode, which appears to be an online co-op mode. Curious. 22nd September.
  • Exclusive #8 - Halo: Reach, Bungie's other project. Not much more than a little teaser right now, but when you purchase Halo 3: ODST, you'll get access to the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta. Not unlike Crackdown and the original Halo 3 beta then. Expect this one in 2010.

  • Exclusive #9 - Alan Wake. Made by a bloke called Sam Lake. Brilliant. All looks a bit Silent Hill-y... Spring 2010.

  • Microsoft has entered into a partnership with last.fm, bringing "instant access to millions of songs" and available free for all Xbox Live Gold members. I'll be honest, this one *was* unexpected. Also, their video service will now be relaunched as Zune Video, their HD video library will now be 1080p, and can be enjoyed instantly with no disc, download or delay. Quite how they plan to do that, I have no f***ing clue.
  • Not content with that, Microsoft have also entered into a partnership with Facebook. Microsoft really did have some surprises up their sleeves. Presumably because I was expecting more game-related shenanigans. Looks like you can do all your Facebookery stuff directly through your 360. Looks like you can also post photos from compatible games straight to your Photos section (PGA Tour was demonstrated with this). Also, Twitter! How contemporary. Microsoft's Autumn schedule is starting to look really full.

  • HIDEO KOJIMA ON STAGE. METAL GEAR SOLID ON XBOX 360. AWOOOGA. AWOOOGA. Called Metal Gear Solid Rising, curiously. Looks like its a new entry in the series. Raiden does appear to be returning. Bet Snake wont be too far behind. (Also, the bloke who introduced Kojima on stage said "Metal Guild Solid". Teh lolz.)
  • And back to what we were expecting. Namely, motion control. To be precise, there's no controller at all. Looks like a little camera. Avatar boxing, family driving cars using invisible steering wheels, Dad shooting with an invisible machine gun, son punching giant monsters destroying skyscrapers, mum and daughter kicking invisible footballs, teenage boy scanning in his skateboard, making it appear on screen and doing jumps and tricks on an invisible skateboard, family pressing imaginary buzzers for quiz shows. Its all gone a bit Wii. Or EyeToy, for that matter. It's called Project Natal. It also appears to have voice control, using it to recognise players and using voice commands to play movies. How casual. Stephan Spielbergo's union-based more-expensive doppelganger Steven Spielberg arrived on stage to big up the tech. Alas, not to apologise for the Crystal Skull.

  • Tech demos of Unreal Engine 3 games called Ricochet and Paint Party were shown, which appear to use this Natal technology. Ricochet appears to be some sort of allegory to Wii Fit, replete with avatars, while Paint Party involves saying colours and then throwing the paint with your hands. You can create stencils using your body in "any crazy shape you want". Where's the invisible machine guns, mister? Peter Molyneux showed up on stage to show everybody how you do this ****. A lake was demonstrated with a girl called Claire and a virtual boy called Milo. When Claire looked into the lake, it showed her real-life counterpart in the reflection. By moving around her hand, she could move around the water and touch the fish. Looks like this Milo is Lionhead's next big thing.

And with that, it's all over. At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, Microsoft know how to do these things. You can bet Sony and Nintendo will be demonstrating graphs and all sorts tommorow, whereas Microsoft just announced a metric ton of ***les and thats all. It'll certainly be interesting to see...

microsoft certainly came out all guns blazing thats for sure. sony and nintendo have got a tough act to follow now.

left 4 dead 2 was a big surprise and the game seems to have a very different setting to most of the first one. new characters, weapons, zombies and also a new gamemode which is unannounced at this stage. it will be interesting to see how this affects the pc community especially since the sdk for mods just came out recently for the first one.

I am all over this read dead revolver
M$ have come good again, I cant wait for Forza3
Another E3, another year of no Gran Turismo, another fail
Unless God of War can make me unlimited supplies of alcohol, as well as play well on my monitor, I cant see Sony winning this hand

Crysis on all 3 platforms is good news too

EA had a pretty dam good presentation maybe not quite up there with what microsoft pulled off but dam impressive for one of the non-console players (ie the big three microsoft, sony, nintendo)

The saboteur looks like a really fun game that I hadn't heard much of or seen until it got showed off today. looks like it is going to be multi-platform too on 360/ps3/pc.

Forza 3 has one thing in its trailer that GT never quite managed - To make the game look fun!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NrW215cgMLU&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed>

"Oh wow! They look realistic but they're all flying through the air and spinning around!!!!!"

I bet they both still blow gameplay wise though.

Um, on a side note... has anyone seen the ad where the Springboks stand on table mountain, and a huge wave of 'water lions' comes at them? HECTIC!

EDIT: WHAT THE HELL??? Why did that post here? Stupid MAC.

Anyway, i was hoping for a Fable II and Gears 2 announcement for PC... otherwise, pretty excited about Alan Wake and Mass Effect 2. :)

Nintendo E3 Media Briefing Highlights
  • They started with an announcement of New Super Mario Bros. for Wii. Not a bad start, one supposes. Looks like the DS game, but upscaled. One-four competitive co-op. The theory is sound - they did manage it with Zelda: Four Swords Adventure, after all. New items include the propeller suit. Launches "Holiday 2009" (think Christmas)
  • Miyamoto's new project is indeed Wii Fit Plus. 15 new balance games, 6 new yoga & strength exercises. Mix and match as you please, target specific body parts, calorie burner counter. All very expansion-packy. Standalone or with a Balance Board this Autumn.

  • Wii Sports Resort with Wii Motion Plus. Nintendo really cant do trash-talking. In "the Americas" in July 26th. PGA Tour 10 also has Wii Motion Plus bundled in, if you absolutely have to have it earlier.
  • Square Enix have announced Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers for Wii and will also be releasing a new Kingdom Hearts ***le for DS on September 29th.

  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (Mario & Luigi RPG 3, basically) for the DS has the brothers with the unusual surname regime reduced in size and stuck in the reptilian overlord's hot bod. Will be out in North America and Europe this Autumn.

  • A RPG being brought back after a long time? Not Earthbound, surely? No, its Golden Sun DS. Crap. Wonder who's making it now that Camelot and Nintendo arent on as friendly terms as they were at one point. 2010, anyways.

  • Ubisoft are releasing a DS openworld game called Cop: The Recruit. "Gritty open-world" (uh-oh). Third-person GTA-alike. Bet its not as good as Chinatown Wars.
  • Flip Notes Studio, some sort of little animating movie maker software, will be out in summer in the US for the DSi.

  • Mario vs Donkey Kong 3, with a level editor and uploading them to friends or Nintendo Wi-Fi. June 8th, exclusive to DSiWare. Also concerning user-generated content, the latest WarioWare ***le is WarioWare: DIY, with create your own game functions.

  • Now Nintendo's signed a agreement with Facebook. Upload pictures taken with DSi straight to your Photos section. Facebook must be feeling pretty smug right about now.

  • Satoru Iwata is "increasingly concerned" about the "invisible wall" being made between experienced players and novice players. Take a look at the crap being made for novice gamers and you'll see why we're building it mate. He believes Mario Kart Wii is a game everyone can play. He's obviously never been blue-shelled.
  • The Wii Vitality Sensor. Looks a lot like a (small device that a woman might keep to pleasure oneself). You put your finger in and it detects your pulse. The hardcore-casual divide crisis is SOLVED!!! I'm guessing this is just a prototype concept that may never even get used. Crazy Iwata.

  • Another Mario game. "For the first time, a second full 3D Mario game is going to appear on a single console". It's... Super Mario Galaxy 2. When people made the joke Super Mario Universe, i'm not sure they were actually expecting it to actually happen.
  • A Team Ninja-Nintendo collaboration. It's a Metroid ***le! Metroid: Other M. A "re-imagining", apparently. 2010. Yes, but where's the other Nintendo-Tecmo collaboration, Fatal Frame/Project Zero?
And it's over. Best bit for me? Probably the Metroid announcement. I wish it were a 2D ***le, like the classics, and I certainly wish Samus didnt speak, but hey, I enjoy the Metroid series. And if Itagaki was still at Team Ninja, you can bet Samus would be carry some watermelons under that metal suit.

Better than last year, but not exactly spectacular either. Your thoughts?

Sony E3 Media Briefing Highlights
  • Playstation generated 30% of retail sales in 2008. Thats right, a third. Who would have thought it?

  • Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines on November 10th.

  • Here we go. The accidentally-confirmed-over-the-weeked PSP Go has now been presented by Kaz "I didnt turn up last year because I was still embarrassed about Riiiiiiiidge Racer" Hirai. October 1st American/European Release for 249 bucks (compare to the PSP's 169 bucks price point). Also announced is Media Go, the successor to the PC Media Manager designed to make integration to the Playstation Store on the PC and to the PC and PSP easier. Sense Me is a new PSP application, which analyses your musive library and delivers a playlist based on the moods you select. PSP toolkit prices are coming down 80% (they must really be desperate, huh). And PSP games will be available on UMD via retail and digital distro from now on (no big surprise, seeing as the PSP Go has no UMD drive). Functionality on Go and ordinary PSP's will be the same, and video delivery service will now be available natively on the PSP.
  • Gran Turismo PSP has been re-confirmed. To be fair, when they said it would be a launch ***le for the PSP, they didnt say which PSP model itd launch alongside... 60fps, 800 cars, 35 tracks. Single-player has standard racing, time trials, drift trials and a legacy license mode. Also a trading mode. Gotta catch em all, dontcha know. Ad-hoc for four player racing. And the claims that this a full-size GT experience. Gosh. Also, the dude who runs Polyphony Digital looks a lot like a Japanese Cliff Richard.

  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP. Also accidentally confirmed by Sony over the weekend, but lets not spoil Kojima's fun. The slut. Set 10 years after Metal Gear Solid 3. Sounds a bit like Portable Ops, really. Four-player co-op, perhaps? Wily Kojima, always giving little hints. 2010. Also in 2010 is Resident Evil Portable. All-new game designed for the handheld, apparently.

  • 50 PSone ***les should hit the PSN this year, starting today in the US with Final Fantasy VII. Hopefully we'll get it on Thursday. I wouldnt hold my breath though.

  • Agent, a Rockstar North game exclusive to PS3. Espionage set in the 1970's.

  • Assassin's Creed 2 <spoiler warning> does contain Dominic and the Animus machine going back in time using genetic memory </spoiler warning>. Does look like its a more varied game this time around. Using the PSP version alongside the PS3 version unlocks six extra weapons.

  • Final Fantasy XIV. No, not a typo. Exclusive to PS3. 2010. I thought that might have been too soon for a major release, but the addition of "online" in the trailer suggests its a MMO, which we know Squeenix has been working on for a while.
  • A new motion controller for the PS3, which works in conjunction with the Playstation Eye. It appears this wand like object can become other objects in the game - demonstrated was tennis rackets, baseball bats, swords, fans and guns. FPS mode, drawing modes also shown. It's the Wiimote - but different! Also shown is an arena style character control, where the guy used two wands to show off sword and shield, shuriken and archery disciplines. It's merely a prototype at this stage, and it doesnt appear to have a name at this point either. Spring 2010 anyways.

  • LittleBigPlanet. Disney costumes coming Autumn. Also, as the tagline is "Play, Create, Share", Sony is taking this as a genre now and the second game in this "genre" is ModNation Racers from United Front Games. Character creation, less sackish than sackboy, but still cartoony. As you'd guess, it's a physics based racing game, complete with power-ups and weapons. And, of course, it wouldnt be much of a creation game if it didnt let you create your own tracks. Doesnt look too bad, in an XBLA kinda way. 2010.
  • Team ICO's new game. It's official ***le is The Last Guardian, and yes, flying cat mouse otter thing is there.

  • Gran Turismo 5 is officially teased. I note the World Rally Championship logo is in the trailer there, so I guess Polyphony are taking over now Evolution Studios are doing the Motorstorm franchise.

  • God of War III is "the final chapter in our fantasy chapter". God of War IV is going to be set in modern-times then? The game looks exactly how you'd expect it to look. It is God of War, after all. If you ever wondered what Minotaur bowels looked like, this game is for you. March 2010.
Right, discuss amongst yourselves who you think provided the best conference. Me? I'm going to lie down with this headache. Maybe actually play a game...

[*]Now Nintendo's signed a agreement with Facebook. Upload pictures taken with DSi straight to your Photos section. Facebook must be feeling pretty smug right about now.[/b]

It'll keep them happy until everybody starts using Google Wave in September.

nintendo was again disappointing at least they offered more this time something for the hardcore gamer to look forward too. they did it wrong though microsoft and sony had way better presentations and showed a lot more decent games. hell I think I will go as far as saying that the EA presentations was better than nintendo's which is a bit sad since EA are one of the big three with their own console. highlight from the nintendo side for 2009 looks like it is going to be red steel 2 in wiimotion plus glory looking forward to this game a lot.

sony presentation good but weakened a bit by having to try and hype up the psp so much. they seem to have the better exclusive lineup for the rest of 2009 but 2010 looks a lot more even. I noticed there was also a lot of multi-platform stuff being pimped at the various showings and plenty of 2010 stuff. assassin's creed 2 is getting a huge push by everyone it seems so that game should sell nicely I think.

and yeah lol at facebook and twitter integration which google wave will make useless.

Nintendo's conference the weakest for two years running.

Meh, I'm sure Metroid and Mario Galaxy 2 will keep me entertained for... A day or so. <_< Naw seriously, I like the Metroid announcement. Hope it's as good as the first two (never played three.)

Also, Yay Team ICO!

Thanks for this level of depth Zonerunner.

A question for you - if Microsoft are so intent on giving us facebook access, how are they going to do this?

A question for you - if Microsoft are so intent on giving us facebook access, how are they going to do this?[/b]
Hopefully this shall explain better than I could put into words:

<div align='center'><object width="580" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/QZqZW3P9qJg&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x402061&color2=0x9461ca&border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/QZqZW3P9qJg&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0x402061&color2=0x9461ca&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="580" height="360"></embed></object></div>

Basically, it looks like its an extension of the 360 Dashboard, for all intents and purposes.

Damn, that star wars trailer is frickin awsome. Even better than the movies!!

Isnt this game a MMO for pc only? shame really, i loved the old republic series.
