Dickenson quits refereeing

You have just made my day. He is the main reason I'd like to see more NH refs blowing our SH matches in the 3N.

I love how people whinge about the standard of IRB and SANZAR referees, but then celebrate every time one of them retires..... (it is contradictory)

Seriously though. He had a good career, not many Australian refs make it that far. Hopefully we have refs capable of filling the hole he leaves in Australian rugby. Good luck in retirement.

The latter statement doesn't necessarily translate to the former. And the celebration of losing bad refs who open up spots for ones which might be more consistent is not contradictory. Hopeful and possibly naive but not contradictory.

If we lose a ref with 47 test caps from the super15. The quality of referees we have to choose from goes down. Also, just about every time a new ref steps up to the plate everyone complains about how inexperienced they are....

I know you can justify celebrating the retirement of a ref because it "opens doors" for new ones. But people aren't celebrating it for that reason, because they don't even know which referees are going to take his place yet!

Anyone who is interested in keeping a high standard of refereeing wouldn't be celebrating the retirement of a test referee IMO.

I totally understand your point and agree with what you say in general (considering Pro Legoete is an example of the type of referee who gets his chance) but in this particular case it's Dickinson, I hate his way of reffing, his arrogance and wanting to nab centre stage all the time and am glad to see the back of him.

A referee who has 47 caps to his name, should really have shown more experience in the matches he blew, he was maybe good in 10 of them, and nothing more than that.

He's a guy all South Africans hated... and we will surely not be saddened by his retirement.

that being said, it's not because he's an aussie, there has been some great aussie refs who deserves the respect from the South African public, but Dickenson in my brutally honest opinion never deserved the respect given to test referees.

you as an aussie, will of course disagree with us, and stand up for him, and that's all fair... my question to you is... is there an aussie ref that is in the elite referee's panel left? yes, 1, and he's a kiwi...

maybe it's time the ARU must focus on the development of referees of good quality, and only then can us Saffas give aussie refs respect...

Fair enough, agree to disagree. :D

Oh look, Heineken is pulling blind assertions out of his arse again. This can only end well.

So what if "all South Africans" hated him? It reflects more on their knowledge of refereeing than Dickinson's performance.

Thats probably because you don't have the slightest clue of what constitutes a good refereeing performance and what doesn't. Give us some examples, some substance. Instead of just blind complaining.

WRONG. I'll stand up for any good ref regardless of where they come from. Most aussies hate Dickinson, why must you make everything about nationalism? Is it because you cannot possibly imagine how anyone else could come to a conclusion without wearing blinkers?

Dickinson had a good career. Get over it.

What is this even supposed to mean? The ARU do develop refs. You don't know what you are talking about.

Can I ask a serious question. How old are you?

To some extent it is a Nationalism issue... Aussies have the privelage of getting good quality South African Refs like Kaplan and Craig Joubert who rarely make mistakes and even if they do, don't have an effect to the outcome of the game... in Tests numerous times Dickenson as well as Walsh has made a lot of terrible calls that has had a major effect to the outcome of the game and that is why Saffas disrespect them.

the only three other Aussie refs who has tests behind their names are Andrew Lees, Nathan Pearce and Ian Smith, with Andrew Lees on the 7's circuit...

I'd say it looks pretty bleak from where I'm sitting...

I agree that to some extent I'm overreacting and not putting all the facts on the table, I'm just trying to emphasize my joy in that Dickenson is retiring... he had a long career, not a good one...

See Heineken. When you are pressed, you actually post some half decent stuff.

SA do have much better refs than us (because rugby is bigger in SA). Thats why they have more on the IRB panel. Regardless of your rather blinkered view, Dickinson and Walsh are quite capable of managing a test match. Again, I can't comment any further on your comments because they are empty of any substance.

Lees, Pearce and Smith are alright, they aren't at top-tier test level yet. But they will progress nicely with all these extra super15 derby games to referee. I think the future will be rather interesting than rather "bleak".
