Sebastien Chabal has been released by Racing Metro with "immediate effect" after failing to negotiate a new contract with the Top 14 giants.

Club president Jacky Lorenzetti announced the shock departure citing a difference of opinion between the player and team management with earlier reports suggesting Chabal and coach Pierre Berbizier were involved in "heated exchange" on Monday night.

The 34-year-old Chabal, the most recogniseable face in French rugby, was thought to be the highest paid player in the world with the back-row forward joining Racing in 2009 on a reported â'¬1m (£830,000) a year deal. L'Equipe reports that fresh contract talks began last year but injuries and a lack of form saw those negotiations stall.

In a statement released on Thursday night, Racing said that Lorenzetti and Chabal had failed to agree terms on a new deal and following a disagreement about the club's "sporting strategy", the two parties had, "decided to put an end to their collaboration and prefer to leave on good terms."

Pretty stringent measures are now being taken to ensure Nate gets back on the forum!!

If he's causing trouble with the coaches the I guess he's got to go. Not much of a loss either, he's been pretty poor for the last few years. I think he may struggle to get a contract in Europe to be honest.

Now if that doesn't get Nate back I din't know what will.

he is likely now to go to Japan according to rugbyrama.fr

a very poor player these days ... Japan is probably the best place for him as no top European side would want him, and lower division side could afford him

Called it :D

Have to be honest, never really rated him. He put in a few big hits here and there, but Harinordoquy is a much better player in all aspects (except facial hair).

Apparently he announced on French TV earlier that he's going to Australia to play. He didn't name a side, but Rebels and Brumbies are the sides rumoured.

Melbourne Rebels may seem the most likely considering they have recruited more overseas players than all the other teams combined, but the Brumbies may also be interested, the other three teams the Western Force, Reds and Waratahs already have Wallaby international number 8's in their squad so may be less likely perhaps, he told French TV channel RMC "I'm going to play in Australia soon".
