South African flanker Schalk Burger and lock Bakkies Botha have both been cited following the Boks' 28-25 win over the Lions on Saturday.

Burger has been cited for attempting to gouge the eyes of Luke Fitzgerald, while Botha has been cited for a dangerous no-arm charge on Adam Jones which left the Welsh prop with a dislocated shoulder.

The two players will face disciplinary hearings before Judicial Officer Alan Hudson of Canada at the offices of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union in Pretoria on Sunday at midday - 1100 BST.[/b]

Neither looks to have much of a defence to me.

I'm not being biased.[/b]

Burger and Botha Hooligans

Great loss in third test match if these guys willn't be allowed to play (and I guess they will miss next match)

Yeah, I would guess at no more than a couple of weeks for Botha, Burger will get lomger, recent eye gougers have got between 12 and 18 week bans

Thats if they're banned at all.

Wow evil clouds appear over Burger I think

Do you have to use your arms when clearing out of the ruck aswell?

I swear I see guys do what Botha did 20 times a match. I though it was just clearing people out of the ruck.

Other than the injury, I believe that Botha has a good chance to defend that. If he was trying to obtain possession by exposing the ball then your allowed to do that aren't you? I see hundreds of players go into rucks without performing actual tackles.

Yeah was kinda thinkin the same myself. Burger is in big trouble, but Botha while I'm sure he did something to deserve a lifetime ban ;) I dont think that was it. Then again depends on the rules, he was cited for a reason, but I agree with Iversen, you see a lot of players doing that. Think Jones was just unlucky.

The Italian N.8 got done for obvious gouging as well against the All Blacks last night
Will be interesting to see how the punishments compare

Well I agree with the whole Burger gouging that everyones mentioning. It was absolutely deliberate and dangerous. They need to come down hard. Matfields attitude was borderline inciting violence when that fight almost broke out in the first half. I hate it when players follow a retreating player in a confrontational situation.

Yeah Parisse got 8 weeks, so will be interesting to see what Burger gets
Though from what i've read, Parisse got the guy in the cheek, and his hand slipped into his eye, as opposed to Burger, who went straight into the eye

I couldn't even see what Botha did....[/b]
Same as he always does
Drove into a ruck in a reckless manner with intent. He's more thug than Rugby player

Did anyone see Bismark standing over O'Driscoll in the 1st match threatening to flatten his face? Its blatant intimidation and the saffers are masters of it

So?do you have a problem with it?We have waited 12 years to win a series against the Lions and we did it, intimidation was only a part of our game plan to beat the Lions.

What Burger did was wrong and he deserves to get banned for 10+ weeks, on the other hand, Bakkies was only doing his job to clear out the ruck and that is what he did.

Certainly did. That's Du Plessis in a nutshell though, thuggery is his game. Good player but f*** he's a nasty c***, you always see Smit close by him to calm him down 'cos he knows he'll do something stupid any minute.

Well put, Intercept. I don't think any sensible rugby fan would argue against punishment for Burger. It was stupid, vicious, and ultimately could have cost the victim his eyesight. Botha, however, I'm not so sure about. The citing commissioner obviously saw something in the hit, but it looked fairly run-of-the-mill to me.

As for intimidation, I've always found the concept fairly laughable. Whenever I've been lying on the ground with some testosterone loaded gorilla pointing down at me and grunting some oath, like Nathan Hines, I've struggled not to laugh outright. If you're an international rugby player, you're already a fairly good example of strength and fitness. The idea that some other international rugby player is somehow superhuman while you're a mere mortal is a joke. All of this is a long winded way of saying intimidation, at least to the more intelligent player, is not intimidating. After THAT 5m scrum yesterday, Adam Jones didn't crow, he simply walked away. I'd bet The Beast felt a little intimidated though...........

The Botha citing is a joke, and whoever filed for it should be castrated.

You might as well cite every person clearing a ruck ever.

Burger should definitely be cited, an absolute tool, you almost get the feeling he doesn't want to play anymore and welcomed the citing.

also, why is everyone whinging about Matfield when it was a Lions player who instigated that little hullabaloo in the first place ?

"Its blatant intimidation and the saffers are masters of it"

Take the tree out of your own eye before pointing out the twig in someone else's.

I have to agree Bismarck is a HUGE hothead, but that statement... you know what, believe what you will.

Twit.

Australians have a reputation for being cool-headed; you could almost say sensitive gentlemen in the sporting arena, have no Idea what you're talking about Aeros.
