Hi, I'm a beginner (Never played before) and i'm gonna do my first practice in January. I talked with a rugby player and he tell me that I better go with rugby at XII and then switch for rugby XV when I got more technics (whent I got better). Do you guys give me the same advise ?

Thank you !

Also, how old are you, height, weight, what position?(if you dont know what position I will give you advice based on your height and weight)

Hi Jamiee26, thanks for the answer, Where I live (Quebec) rugby isn't really popular (Yeah I know that's suck) so there's no rugby all year, pre-season start in january inside and then in March the season begin outside. For the position, I don't know nothing, like I said before i'm a beginner and I will probably know it by my coach in January. But you can probably advise me on which position I should play ;)

Height : 70 inches
Weight : Around 90 Kg

And for the main question ?

Do you mean Rugby 7s (VII) or Rugby League (which could be called Rugby XIII, I suppose)?

I talk about the rugby that have 7 players on the field !

Sorry it's my bad hahaha got the wrong Roman number !

How fast are you? From your height and weight you could probably play in the backs or in the back row. Actually if you're playing at school level possibly 2nd row as well.

If you're fast, the wing might be a good place to start, but I think a couple of training sessions with a coach is probably the best way to work out where you should play.

About rugby 7's, dont bother go onto 15 a side to get to know the lads you will want to get the experience in the 15's.

isn't 70 inches only about 5'10 (177cm)? how old are you? if fully grown i would have said halfback or if ou can put come more muscle on then even the front row. remember, front rows win matches ;)

I would agree thought that you will learn much better technique in 15's, sevens is good for fitness and ball handling i guess but not much else.

have you watched a bit of rugby?

Yeah 70'' = 177cm
I'm 21 years old and for the muscle i can really get more ... I have more fat than muscle from now ! I have begin my training only a few days ago !

If you ever want to play Rugby Union (XV) then you have to play Rugby Union. Don't go into league to try learn to play union, it's better going into union and being average for two or three seasons, but picking up the basics of the game and the union specifics like scrums, lineouts etc, than play league and make the conversion later.

That being said, if you like Union and you want to play a game where you can make runs and throw the ball around a bit I'd go to league. It's certainly easier to learn and it can be very fun to play. It also means that positions aren't quite so role specific.

Thanks everyone for your answers ! Finally there's possibility that I couldn't play this year :( The nearest club is at 1h30 from my home and I begin my university !) Maybe I should start my own club right here. Don't know if i'm going to have 20 players

If you start your own club you could get Martian Johnson as coach, because he will be out of work soon!!!

Yeahhh he will probably left England to come live here in Quebec where rugby is not popular at all hahaha !
But the 2011 world cup give hope in Quebec ... the club at 1h30 mins from my town have now 250 members (WHOAAA) !
