Probably a thread for Iversen but I must let my frustrations loose.

All who watched the Canes Highlanders game can agree that Dickinson had a shocker. But what about the no try decision in the Blues Saders game, It was clear that Maitland knocked it forward to an offside Dagg and he calls a knock on by Afoa, but Afoa didn't even touch the ball with his hands at all and if he did then it should have been an accidental offside anyway because Kaino was in front of him and he played the ball. But Pollock calls an accidental offside when Braid knocks it on and Williams picks it up offside which is really good.

But in the Brumbies Chiefs game when the no.5 [don't know his name] goes for the wrap pass and the Brumbies no.14 knocks it on and his offside supporting player picks it up the Chiefs don't get a penalty.

And the Dummy runner penalty when Brett went in for a try was marginal but I do agree with it although I feel the obstructed tackler wouldn't have stopped Brett anyway. Then just to be consistent Pollock pulls the Saders up when Ellis runs a line where his forward support is running the same direction and cuts off a player I don't think would have caught Ellis anyway. Which brings me to the try by Sopoaga in the Canes Highlanders game, exact same thing happened, Soakai obstructed the Canes defence which allowed Cowan to make the break and feed off to Sopoaga to score.

I really think all these refs need to have a big meeting and sort their crap out.
I never watched the rest of the games so I can't comment on those referees but im hoping they were ok..

Well it seems that the refs told the players/coaches that they were going to be strict on the offsides, dummy runners etc, and they were, so no complaints here

... if you look at how "well" some of the teams played, you can find plenty of reasons why they lost, without blaming the referee ... my team lost by 2 points to the blues, but i'm not looking for referee mistakes to justify the loss - it's early in the season, mistakes are made, well done blues, both teams played well - it was a good game

im not annoyed at the refs for teams losing, im not even blaming the referees for them losing, im just frustrated at their constant inconsistency.

Thats what im sick of, the "refs make mistakes so what" attitude, yes they do and for a very long time I have gone along with it but it is just getting ridiculous. There should be a system where they are at fault and should be punished.

Especially the knock on called by the TMO in the Blues Saders game. He replayed it enough times and couldn't pick up that Maitland made the initial knock on which was then touched by an accidnetal offside Israel Dagg, and somehow called a knock on by Afoa where the ball came off his thigh???...

Nonu gets a week suspension for the late hit on Cowan. Yeah that's fair,
But what about the guy who was punching up the Force halfback when the Reds had a scuffle... That in my eyes is more punishable than a late tackle, that displays violence.

If they want to be more strict on rulings then they should first take a look at themselves.

Sure, inconsistency is annoying - i'm pretty sure that punching penalties were given in the Tahs V Rebels games, so it would be nice if it was the same in all of the games.

i'm not making excuses for the refs, and i'm sure that their performance is reviewed on a game by game basis, but we do have to accept the fact that they re human, and that they re going to miss stuff. I'm hoping that they, like the players, gradually get better during the year, and that they "Hit form" during the World Cup, so that no teams can feel aggrieved for any major stuff ups

rebels v brumbies

Surely Kaplan's performance on Friday has to be one of the most diabolical reffing performances of the past few seasons.

Not to take it away from the Rebels who defended superbly all game, and the fact that there were many opportunities for both teams to win the game (well mostly the brumbies) except for player mistakes.

However, many of the scrum penalties were due to kaplan's inconsistent timing of the calls, obviously the last penalty was ridiculous and more importantly inconsistent with the way he had reffed the entire game, and that penalty against delve for getting back on his feet was pretty much the most blatant display of misunderstanding the rules ive seen from a ref in a while. I heard him over the broadcast saying that it doesn't matter if he is held or not, if he hits the ground, he must release the ball. Now i know thats not the rule.

Now I've had my rant, I'd more constructively like to have a conversation about people's view on refs who regularly penalise against the run of play for diving over the top (not staying on feet) at the ruck. This comes up every now and again where refs seem to penalise a team with momentum for a strong clearout for falling over the ruck due to blasting the other guy out of there. I can't remember which game it was on the weekend that this happened quite a few times, but I'm sure it was one in the past weekend. I'd just like to know if other people notice this, what you think solutions for this are (different rule interpretations a la the hands off the ball one which seems to have ignited rugby in the past year), and what your general thoughts are on this.

The release the ball after being tackled is unfortunately a new rule that I don't think anybody would agree with. Not only was Delve a victim of this poor judgement but so was Rokocoko. I think the referees are taking the game to the next level where they make the game more about themselves than the actual teams.

Let's say someone tackles you but slips off you and just because you lose your footing you end up hitting the turf without being held and get penalised for standing back up with the ball.... That is complete and utter bull****....

I was actually impressed with the refs in the 1st round of the Super Rugby for how well the scrums worked.
I agree, there is only one ref who can only see so much. For the most part the system works really well, especially with the touchies being able to alert him.
