It was a mixed week for NZ teams. The Crusaders and Chiefs had important wins, while the Blues and the Highlanders lost matches they could’ve won. Throw in a few injuries to key players and you have an interesting week all up!

Props

Ben Tameifuna (Chiefs) – Very Unlikely
Big Ben is a fantastic prop in the making, but his decision making is absolutely abhorrent. He was pulled near half time to make way for the superior Big Ben, which is understandable. Tameifuna is a great bench prospect for the Chiefs, but will likely not progress much further with Afeaki the clear best tight head in the squad.

Ben Afeaki (Chiefs) – Very Likely
Afeaki being selected is just a formality now. His work around the field is second to none for props, and his scrimmaging ability is nothing to laugh at. With Faumuina suffering a medium length injury, Afeaki is a certainty for the All Blacks come June. Faumuina should be back in time for the squad naming, but with his injury and Owen Franks’ form leaving much to be desired, Afeaki has a great chance of getting some solid game time against France.

Wyatt Crocket (Crusaders) – Unlikely
Crockett had a quiet game against the Crusaders. At this point in the season Ben Franks clearly has the upper hand, and unless Crockett starts to up his game it will be hard to see the selectors looking past Franks.

Ben Franks (Hurricanes) – Likely
Did not play.

Joe Moody (Crusaders) looked good off the bench this weekend, in his first lengthy appearance. Pauliasi Manu (Chiefs) continues to offer steady performances.

Hookers

Hika Elliot (Chiefs) – Even
Elliot has lifted his game over the last couple of weeks, Mahonri Schwalger may have trouble getting the starting hooker jersey back off him once he returns from injury. Elliot is busy around the park and solid in the set piece, and with Coles missing a couple of weeks, he may just have the upper hand in the battle for third choice hooker berth.

Dane Coles (Hurricanes) – Even
Did not play.

Codie Taylor (Crusaders) earned his first cap for this weekend, and looked strong on offence (though stuck to the left wing like an old school winger). James Parsons (Blues) is improving with every game and will be a great reserve once Mealamu returns. Liam Coltman (Highlanders) had one of his best professional performances too and will benefit hugely from the consistent game time he will get with Hore and Brayden Mitchell injured.

Locks

Luke Romano returned from injury against the Kings which means there will definitely be no openings in the June squad. Anthony Boric (Blues) also made his much anticipated return. Mike Fitzgerald (Chiefs) is maturing into a good replacement for Craig Clarke.

Loose Forward

Matt Todd (Crusaders) – Unlikely
Todd was a defensive maestro against the Kings, making all ten of his attempted tackles. His lack of versatility probably counts against him, but if selected it is unlikely he would do a bad job.

Steven Luatua (Blues) – Even
A couple of average performances in a row from Luatua means his place is not as secured as it may have been a few weeks ago. His fitness probably needs a bit of work, but his ability in the set piece is at the higher end for NZ loosies.

Luke Braid (Blues) – Even
Braid delivers strong performances each week, and is physical on both offence and defence. He is now an integral part of the Blues set up and will probably get a cap or two down the line. Whether the selectors see him as a potential long term player is still up in the air.

Brad Shields (Hurricanes) – Even
Did not play.

Peter Saili (Blues) took a step back this week, while George Whitelock (Crusaders) had another good performance. John Hardie (Highlanders) turned in another industrious performance.

Halfbacks

Tawera Kerr-Barlow (Chiefs) – Even
Kerr-Barlow has delivered one solid performance after another and is very unlucky to have caught Colin Slade’s broken jaw-itis. His stint on the side line will give
TJ Perenara a chance to gain ground. Will a few weeks prior to the squad announcement be enough to hold his position in the All Blacks?

TJ Perenara (Hurricanes) – Even
Did not play.

First Fives

Chris Noakes (Blues) continued to blossom for his new team, while Colin Slade (Highlanders) is slowly returning to being a quality player. He might need to get a bit of kicking practice is, however.

Centres

Andrew Horrell (Chiefs) – Even
Horrell is a very safe player, but still possesses a bit of the X-factor that guys like Tim Bateman are missing. His skill set is diverse, and seems to play with confidence at all times. While there is a bit of a log jam at the moment, with Conrad Smith unavailable come the end of the year, and Kahui departing, Horrell could have a shot of making the team sometime this year.

Francis Saili (Blues) – Likely
Like the rest of his team, Saili suffered from a bit of a handling issue against the Waratahs. His attacking play, however, was fantastic, creating numerous opportunities for his team mates to capitalise on.

Rene Ranger (Blues) – Unlikely
Ranger’s age and non-committal means he probably sits behind other candidates in the pecking order. He will have to deliver consistently good performances for the Blues if he is to be considered. The fact that he is more of a power player will also not be in his favour, due to the likelihood of Nonu being inside whichever centre is selected. That being said, he was a constant threat on attack against the Waratahs.

Elsewhere, Jason Emery (Highlanders) should retain the 13 jersey for the remainder of the season down south, and in a couple of years will have a serious chance of getting selected in the All Blacks. He does need to bulk up a bit, however.

Outside Backs

Tim Nanai-Williams (Chiefs) – Unlikely
With Kahui back from injury we should see Nanai-Williams slipping out a spot or two, where he will have a better chance of pushing his case for selection.

Johnny McNicholl (Crusaders) – Unlikely
McNicholl didn’t get as much quality ball this week as he would’ve liked. It will be interesting to see how he fares against the defensive Stormers in South Africa, where go forward will be at a premium with Dan Carter and Kieran Read both missing.

Charles Piutau (Blues) – Likely
Every week I realise I should have Piutau in my fantasy squad, and every week I fail to select him. While he didn’t have an error free performance for the Blues (in fact he was one of the worst for handling errors), when he did keep his hands on the ball he was a menace. One of the most promising things about Piutau is that he is great at holding off attackers and putting them in two minds, meaning he can slow them down and give his team mates a chance to recover on defence after conceding a line break.

Probable Squad:

Hookers – A Hore, K Mealamu, H Elliot
Props – T Woodcock, O Franks, C Faumuina, B Franks, B Afeaki
Locks – S Whitelock, B Retalick, L Romano, A Williams
Loose Forwards – K Read, S Cane, V Vito, L Messam, S Luatua
Halfbacks – P Weepu, A Smith, T Kerr-Barlow
First Fives – D Carter, A Cruden, B Barrett
Centres – C Smith, M Nonu, F Saili
Outside Backs – I Dagg, J Savea, C Piutau, H Gear
Utility Backs – B Smith, R Kahui

Out – D Coles
In – H Elliot

Blues - 7
Chiefs - 8
Hurricanes - 5
Crusaders - 6
Highlanders - 6

Disagree with Bateman not having x-factor. I personally think he has more panache (cause I'm now too classy to use the word x-factor) than Horrell - it's just defensively he's probably not as good. I wouldn't have had the same opinion before he came back from Japan mind you.

I like Bateman, I just think he's a very similar player to Conrad Smith - a bit better kicking game, definitely, but not quite as strong defensively or on attack. I think Horrell is very good offensively, and breaks a lot of tackles/gains a lot of ground for a (fairly) small guy. Stats wise Horrell has certainly attacked better, but obviously that isn't the best indication.

Bateman is ok, but he has about the same amount of x-factor as Ryan Crotty IMO. Read into that what you will. He has a superb passing game, but his lack of physicality - both in attack and defense - is a bit of an issue. I certainly think Horrell has more potential though. He just seems to have so much time with ball in hand, and though he doesn't seem overly fast or elusive, he seems to be able to break the first tackle. I'm not convinced he will ever be an All Black, but he certainly brings an intriguing skill-set to the table.

I too was impressed with Moody off the bench for the Crusaders (not that he is anywhere near All Black consideration). It was great to see Coltman get some good game-time (and perform well!) for the Highlanders, as he has a lot of potential. I would like to see more of Dom Bird, as he has impressed me more in his chances this season than Romano.

dont know why Peter Saili's name is even featured here. I honestly look at the blues team and see him as the biggest problem. Cant pass and has trouble holding the ball in the tackle. Blues really need a smart decision making #8. Peter is just a hit up guy and he's not even doing that very well with all the ball he's spilling. If I was JK I'd be thinking seriously about giving Barrett a couple games at 8

I think that is a bit harsh on Saili - he really impressed in the first two matches of the season. He made a a lot of ground with ball in hand, and looked to have picked up his work-rate too. There is no doubt he had a shocker against the Waratahs, but it is too early to say whether he has gone back to his old inconsistent ways, or that match was just an aberration.

Barrett is a real tractor. Big ticker but quite low legspeed compared to effective ball carrying 8's. Probably why he plays at 6/lock. I don't know he would be able to get front foot ball from the back of the scrum or in general play. The game he did play he certainly didn't feature carrying. Whie I agree Saili isn't ideal, I don't think Barrett is the answer.

I'm not sure about barrett either to be honest I've hardly seen him play apart from a bit of his one blues appearance and some ITM cup highlights where he looked like a busy runner. I just dont see Peter as good enough a #8 to take the blues to the top and really dont know what other options there are. #8 is so critical, blues should have picked up Alex Bradley!! Woohioo!! Half joking but also pretty sure he would do a much better job all round than Pete Saili he's a total team player with leadership qualities that's proven he can carry the ball forward in super rugby and has good hands.

What's happened to Matt Luamanu. I know he's got his issues but can't believe he is not in the Blues squad again. If the Blues need a ball carrier - there isn't a better #8.

EDIT: Never mind - seen he signed for Kyuden Voltex...shame as he could have been the next Isitolo Maka. Maybe for Japan...lol.

Rene Ranger has been the second best centre in Super Rugby (from the games I've seen) and has it even been confirmed that he's leaving? His ability in the breakdown is insane as well as his defence and attack.

as far as I know it's not conformed and it seems like he is really keen to make the all blacks. I get the feeling it's one of those situations where if he does not make the AB's he will leave and if he does he will stay.

on current form and with gaps in the squad because of injury and players going overseas/sabbatical you would have to say right now he will have his name down in pencil for a squad of 30 for sure.

I'm yet to watch all the blues/chiefs game I just saw bits of it working with the TV on. by the sounds of it Kahui had a blinder, maybe put ranger in perspective but we don't have Kahui for two seasons once super season finishes. Wonder if he will be used in the test break...

Hansen seemed pretty ****** that Kahui is leaving and the press are attacking the NZRU for not doing more to keep him here. I tend to think Japan was his first choice and NZRU didn't have much of a chance. After 4 shoulder surgeries I recon the reality that another could end his carrier has made the big money and easy rugby in Japan a very attractive basically ideal option for Kahui, it will basically set himself up financially and maybe give him a full year or so with a greatly reduced risk of re-injuring his shoulders before coming back to push for a 2015 selection.

I actually almost think it's a good thing for NZ rugby in this specific case. We get to keep Kahui on ice in Japan, staying fit with a lower chance of injury and then he will be back for the next world cup. He has proven a few times he can slot straight back in and be awesome without needing any time to regain form or anything. In the meantime we can develop some other midfielders and our combos won't be broken up by Kahui's injury breaks.

Kahui wasn't as fantastic as it seemed. He went through a gap and botched a pass to Cruden which was just a lack of understanding and will come back in the next few weeks but he didn't stand out for me. Ranger was a constant threat, always over the advantage line, made several amazing off-loads and has turned into a nightmare in the breakdown for the opposite team. He's turning into Conrad Smith which is an absolute delight to see. He's playing smart rugby and I think his leadership role in the Blues is bringing out the best in him. I have no more time for Kahui, he was average in the world cup and he's still average now.

are you for real or is this a troll? His contribution was critical to the world cup campaign and he was probably the best all black back in the final, he was basically exactly what the All Blacks needed on the left wing.

I'm not sure what game you were watching, but Kahui completely outplayed Ranger in the weekend. Yes Kahui did make a couple of errors, but he was the best player on the park for me. Ranger has had a very good season however, and this was the first time I remember him being outplayed - he has been the form NZ centre for me. I can't say I see him turning into Conrad Smith, as he is a very different player than Smith, and he still has a few issues with consistency and his handling.

I don't agree at all with Kahui being average at the RWC at all. Indeed alongside Israel Dagg he was the pick of our backs in my opinion (despite playing out of position!). As Larksea stated he was superb in the final too (one of the few All Blacks that was)!

Highlanders will probably sign him next year anyway...

Don't be silly. He is a good 5-10 years to young for Joseph ;)

i've been kinda wondering where Luamanu is as well. I think he would fit kinda well into the blues.

It's a shame he's not in super rugby, I think he has some more potential that will come with being a full time professional and having a higher level of fitness/training.
