New Zealand lock Ali Williams is unlikely to play again until the end of the year after it was revealed he needs a third Achilles tendon operation.

The 29-year-old missed most of last season with a similar problem and made a short-lived comeback in January.

"While the procedure to connect the tendon to his joint is intact it has caused a tear further up his tendon," said All Blacks doctor Deb Robinson.

All Blacks lock Ali Williams has suffered another setback in his rehabilitation from a torn Achilles tendon and will need a third operation, the New Zealand Rugby Union said on Saturday.

Williams, who turned 29 on Friday, has barely played any rugby in 18 months and is not expected to return until the end of the year. He is unlikely to be available for the All Blacks's end-of-season grand slam tour of Britain.

He ruptured his right Achilles in an Auckland Blues pre-season game in January and needed a second operation. He also had surgery last year when it ruptured during the Super 14.

the one position we don't have good depth in, every time we get a new good lock they end up going overseas the next year

I would say our depth is far worse at First-five, 2nd Five and 7 to be honest. Locking doesn't seem to be a huge issue at the moment
