A pair of New England colleges hope to play a 24-hour match, setting a world mark while raising funds for charity.
Women's teams from Keene State and Williams, of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, respectively, hit upon the idea of a marathon game after evaluating the March of Dimes model, whereby donors pledge amounts for every mile walked. The 'Scrum for a Cure' contest is to benefit breast and colorectal cancer research. If completed, it will be acknowledged as a Guinness World Record, according to Williams coach Gina Coleman.
The attempt, sanctioned by school authorities, underlines the legitimacy and resources that academic institutions afford sports programs. Setting its technical merits, the pursuit also serves as another example of rugby teams positioning themselves in the mainstream of the campus environment.
Williams' administration wasn't quite so supportive of rugby when Coleman studied there. But these days she is associate dean of students.
'I can't stress enough that the Guinness part is very secondary to the teams. Our main goal is to raise funds for two deserving causes. The Williams Women's Rugby Football Club has a few alumnae who are currently fighting the battle against breast and colorectal cancer', Coleman said in an email.
Working under International Rugby Board strictures designating the minimum number of players -- which is a tight five -- the schools have devised a rotation whereby players will compete for 60 minutes and then have a 30 minute rest period. The teams expect to go to uncontested scrums 'very early in the attempt', Coleman said.
The school's nutritionist and dining services have arranged a special menu for the event, at no cost, while local doctors and a Massachusetts fire department will also provide free medical coverage.
The match kicks off April 23 at 8 am.[/TEXTAREA]
