Embrose Papier to Sale as world cup cover for Faf
We didn't have enough Springboks IMO
Sam Harrison retiring in the new year
Dan Kriel WP, Roelof Smit and Andre Warner Bulls and some lesser know players all joined the Lions. Nice going Pote, your insistence on picking Ivan van Zyl has lead to the Bulls losing their best 9.
Dylan Hartley has retired.
He's got a bad reputation, and rightly so, but he was a good player and arguably the best England captain since Martin Johnson.
Wish him well in retirement and hope the injuries that forced him out don't impact on his private life - never like to see a player forced out after so many injuries.
As Saints Fan yep sad to see retired.
Injury wise writing been on wall with concussions and knee issues best part of year since last saints game.
With Brussow and Dylon gone in last couple of weeks guess money is about for replacement.
Hooker we are ok with 3 decent if not top notch but solid premier players.
We look a tad light and old in back row unless C B produces another bolter out of Academy.
Saints are the up and coming team, and will be an attractive team to players looking for a new team, i can see them holding out ready to poach some sarries players
I could definitely see Singleton making the move to Saints to replace Hartley; I imagine he’s on more cash than Sarries can be affording to spend on a second choice player now.
Back row is the real issue for Saints though and seeing as Saracens only have 5 of them as it is I can’t see them being keen to part with any of them.
Joe Marchant signs a three year extension for Quins but is also going to Super Rugby side Blues, on loan.
Interesting move - I imagine it'll do a lot for his development as a player, however you'd have thought he'd stick around to try and impress England bosses, especially in a post-RWC season where they'll look to fringe players more for the 6N/Summer Tour. Who's ahead of him at Quins?
That said, if RWC2023 is his goal then a cheeky season abroad now is the best time to do it.
I can kind of see why Quins would look to offload him. They’ve got a bit of a stock pile at 13 with himself, Campagnaro and Northmore all being specialists. The Blues is not the place to go though; they’re renowned for taking the IT factor out of young players. Ioane must be a bit gutted, he had his eyes set on 13.
Completely forgot about Campagnero going there!
Love that guy
He's our starting 13 when fit so there is chat about this being a way around the salary cap (the dates are very specific) but I doubt that personally. I feel like we are more likely to get a Blues player for that period as an exchange deal (was hinted at in our agreement with nzru from a couple years ago that this would happen).
Who do they have at 13 or who else would benefit from some time in London?
I imagine if you're getting someone coming the other way it'd be in a position of weakness rather than a 13 (otherwise there's no point in swapping - just keep the guys who know your systems)
Don't know about Quins getting a player in return.
Sounded more like something Marchant wanted and pushed for rather than Quins saying oh we can do this and have a swap done.
Blues have limited numbers currently to be loaning out players.
Also no chance this is a way around the salary cap, the dates are from Jan to June which is the super rugby season.
1st jan 3 weeks before the season starts to 30th june a week after the final.
Internationally he’s in one of the most competitive positions. Getting experience away from the Premiership can only be a good thing.
It might be from marchant and he's said he wants to play out there before but because Archie White is on loan out there at the moment (Wellington or something j think) and our agreement with the NZRU promised coaching and personal exchanges in the interest of broadening experiences I think this is also something that the club offer now. Wouldn't be surprised is Smith went for a stint tbh
It’s not good news to be losing one of our best players for an important part of the season, but trying to look at the bigger picture, I think it will improve him as a player which is good for him, us and England.
I think it could be a good experience for a number of players - Smith is not a bad shout but I’ll be surprised if it’s anything other than a waste of time for White - he’s just not very good IMO, so even if his stint in NZ improves him, I suspect it’ll be to take him from being Championship standard to Premiership at best.
One could argue playing in a backline outside Beaudy Barret and inside Reiko Iaone affords that opportunity to strongly impress EJ...
Though he won't be in contention for the Six Nations - maybe not the summer tour either (not sure on dates of that/dates of his loan)
Awesome news also for Chiefs fans with AAron Cruden coming back....
...two great generals of the NZ game combining formidably in the halves with Brad Webber at SH and Cruden at FH for the Mighty Chiefs.......
not to mention pocket rocket Damian McKenzie at fullback....potential for great things to happen touch wood..
I know thems the rules, surely they could make an exception on a basis its a short term loan. He may not make it anyway and his contract may not allow it either but i think this istance should be an exception to the rule.
