One can only assume that a lot of players' families are being favourably employed in the magazine business in Toulon?

As usual, people will always mistake these as the salary budgets and conclude that even Oyonnax and Brive are double that of the Premiership squads.

But it's overall budget of course, so I would suggest that if this was just budget on salary then Toulon would probably be the highest. Meanwhile, Toulon and Racing both produce relatively little out of their academies whilst Toulouse and Clermont produce massively more players and have more of their budget spent on academy.

Also the top 3, Toulouse, Clermont and Stade Français have been near or at the top of French rugby for most of the professional era, and successfully evolved their brands as the first super clubs of French rugby as it moved away from the likes of smaller town teams like Beziers, Agen, Bourgoin, Colomiers and Brive succeeding. They are bigger teams as a business than Toulon, and will employ and do more outside rugby thus meaning they are higher.

Another thing is I'm surprised Perpignan are so low, they were trying to expand their brand from a town French team to more of a wider market throughout Catalonia as opposed to merely Perpignan, but it seems to have hit a stop for the moment with weakened finances.

Biarritz were arguably one of last smaller French clubs to succeed, but as has been mentioned before several times, business wise it would make sense for them and Bayonne to merge and form a team that appeals to a wider market in Basque region but that risks annoying both fans at loss of tradition which is keeping them as two smaller lower teams who will be nearer relegation than playoffs for the time being.

These numbers are actually partially wrong, they refer to the 2012-2013 season.

Interested where you sourced your figures........?

Desi better tell us where you are getting your figures from as they look a little inflated to me, the figure you stated for Montpellier is well over inflated for example.
Perpignan will now that they have a new President come sponsor be seeking new deals with new sponsors and their budget will also be on the rise to something a little more respectable, but you have to say in the past they have done good things with a very limited budget they were French Champions in 2010 and their budget was very mediocre

.

And it's the media that perpetuates this myth as well. But why should we be surprised when it's the rugby media. They never do any research into the French leagues, they just listen to what their buddies tell them and take it as fact.

Also here are the Pro D2 budgets:
